Lost Places in South Tyrol: A Selection
Lost Places are referred to as forgotten and abandoned places that exert a very special fascination on many. In South Tyrol, you can also search for such "abandoned premises" and delve deep into local history.
Wildbad in Innichen
For example, in Innichen you can find the so-called Wildbad, a former grand hotel that was acquired by Dr. Johann Scheiber in 1854. It was converted into a sanatorium and soon became known beyond the borders of South Tyrol. Notable personalities such as the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph spent their summer retreats here. When World War I broke out, guests stopped coming as Wildbad was difficult to access due to the separation of South Tyrol. Today, the hotel complex is largely decayed and can only be viewed from the outside. It is accessible via a hiking trail from Innichen.
Fortress Tre Sassi
The Fortress Tre Sassi was built to defend the Gadertal or Valparola Pass. It was constructed between 1897 and 1900, but was already outdated at the start of the war. In 1915, it was shelled and largely destroyed. To prevent the Italians from building a new fortress, a deception was used. Since the year 2000, the fortress has been converted into an interesting museum that displays many exhibits that illustrate the atrocities of the war in the Dolomites.
Former Luxury Hotel Paradiso
In the idyllic Martello Valley, at an altitude of 2,160 meters, lies the former Luxury Hotel Paradiso, notable for its red exterior. Built between 1933 and 1935, it primarily offered relaxation to wealthy guests in the 1930s. The luxurious stays ended with World War II, when the hotel was converted into a spa hotel for wounded soldiers. Today, the facility can only be viewed from the outside. The adventure trail leads up to the Plima Gorge.
