Chestnut Trail in the Eisack Valley
Following the trail of the chestnut, for example, you can hike the Chestnut Trail in the Eisack Valley, a long-distance hiking trail that can also be done in individual stages. Along this route, you will pass through chestnut groves and vineyards, hike to the Ritten high plateau, as well as to Terlan or Vilpiano. Of course, you should also try the regional delicacies that you can purchase at various farms along the way. Equally impressive are the numerous natural and cultural monuments that testify to very long traditions.
Along the water: The Merano Waal Circuit
As early as the 12th century, irrigation canals were built in the lower Vinschgau and the surrounding area of Merano to ensure water supply for the orchards. In order to be able to maintain these canals accordingly, the so-called Waal paths were built, and along these paths, you can still hike wonderfully today. The inclines are slight, you will always be accompanied by water, and you can enjoy the impressive panorama. The Merano Waal Circuit connects a total of eleven paths. You can either hike these in eight stages or choose individual tours. However you decide, the Waal paths will definitely inspire you!
Farm Trail near Schenna
Also recommended is a hike on the Schenna Farm Trail, where you will pass various mountain farms between the village and Schennaberg, covering about 480 meters in altitude. The nine-kilometer circular hiking trail takes you from Naif Valley to the hamlet of Vernaun and then further onto the "Farm Trail". The highest point of the tour is at 1,100 meters above sea level, and from there, you can take in the breathtaking view of Merano. A highly recommended autumn tour for those interested in South Tyrolean farms.
Explore the Penon Sun Slope
This hiking trail starts in Entiklar, a small village near Kurtatsch. From there, you will hike to the so-called Penon Sun Slope, passing a small waterfall and enjoying the beautiful panorama of the valley. After reaching Penon, you will hike past the St. Nicholas Church on trail No. 5 to Hofstatt, where there are also several places to stop for refreshments, and then back to Kurtatsch or Entiklar, where the three-hour hike ends.
