Vacation in Sluderno / Schluderns

If you would like to turn back time and experience a vacation far away from hustle and stress, you should spend your next free days in the idyllic village of Sluderno. At 920 meters above sea level, you sometimes get the feeling that time stands still. Surrounded by an impressive mountain world, cozy guesthouses right in the village, and plenty of hours of sunshine. This is thanks to the sunny slope that invites you to spend some leisurely hours on a terrace or just on a cozy house bench. While the sun gently tickles your nose, you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Ötztal Alps and start planning your next discovery trip. Sluderno is located in the popular holiday region of Vinschgau and nature is right outside the door.

Tip: before you wander into the distance, you should take a closer look at the historical center of the village. Many houses have artistic paintings on the exterior walls, and the church in the tranquil village, built in the Gothic style, is a small jewel of art historical importance. A small extension of the village walk is also highly recommended, as there are many gentle orchard slopes and lush green areas around Sluderno.

Medieval Flair

A special treasure is located just above Sluderno. The Churburg is located very close to the Reschenpass and is one of the most beautiful and visited castles in the country, well known beyond the borders. The fact that the castle complex, built in 1253, is still so well-preserved today is thanks to numerous renovations and reconstructions.

Originally designed as a Romanesque fortress, the appearance of Churburg changed significantly in the early 16th century; Gothic elements were added: a beautiful inner courtyard, a dreamy arcade and magnificent garden terraces. For practical reasons, a new outer bailey was also built. In the second half of the 16th century, a complete reconstruction of the castle was undertaken. This reached its peak in the 18th century when the castle finally transformed into a magnificent Renaissance palace. The magnificent building has been owned by the Counts Trapp for many decades. Visitors can visit Churburg from March to October. A fixed point in every tour: the armory. Here you can see the largest private medieval weapon collection.

In summer, the Churburg becomes particularly loud and dangerous. This is when the annual knight's games take place - an adventurous spectacle for young and old. Brave knights compete in breathtaking show fights, jugglers provide entertainment, and Roman chariots engage in spectacular races.

Valuable Finds

Hobby archaeologists and those who want to become one will get their money's worth at the Vintschger Museum. The permanent exhibition "Archaic Vinschgau" deals with the archaeology of the valley, while "Wasserwosser" provides information about the famous Waale (= irrigation systems). At the higher-lying excavation site Ganglegg, you can admire finds from the Bronze, Iron, and Roman ages. There are also reconstructions of a Bronze Age and an Iron Age house here.

You can also make discoveries in the nearby biotope Schludernser Au. During a hike (on an educational trail) around the Au, you can discover and observe typical plants and creatures in their natural environment.

One of the most powerful and beautiful castle complexes in South Tyrol is located on the hills above Schluderns in the Vinschgau: the Churburg. The Churburg is named after the bishops of Chur, the original lords of the castle. Prince-Bishop Heinrich von Montfort had it built around 1255 as a bulwark against the rising and rebellious Matsch Counts, who were in constant feud with the diocese of Chur.
