Historic community on the border with Switzerland

Vacation in Tubre in Val Monastero / Taufers im Münstertal

A little secluded from the main traffic arteries, but all the more peaceful, is the municipality of Tubre / Taufers at 1250 meters above sea level. Here, on the border with Switzerland, 969 people live, who until recently were mainly engaged in agriculture. Meanwhile, some holidaymakers have also discovered the beauty of the municipality and therefore tourism has been flourishing more and more in recent years. This is not surprising, as both active and family holidaymakers find the ideal conditions for enjoyable days here. Since two-thirds of the Val Monastero / Münstertal already lie in Switzerland, the sights of the neighbors are only a stone's throw away.

But Tubre itself also has a lot to offer. Adventurous tours around the Stelvio National Park await mountain bikers, numerous panoramic hiking trails are available for hikers, and alpinists and climbers are drawn to the surrounding mountains. In winter, when Tubre is covered in a snow-white blanket, there is nothing standing in the way of an unforgettable skiing experience. Quieter, but no less demanding, is cross-country skiing on one of the well-developed trails in the region.

Tip: Romantic horse-drawn carriage rides are a special holiday experience, especially in the cold season. Wrapped up warmly and with a lovingly prepared pot of tea in tow, you can be drawn through the snowy Val Monastero / Münstertal at a comfortable pace. While gazing into the distance and gently rocking in the carriage, the stress and hustle and bustle of everyday life are blown away.

In the Footsteps of the Castle Lords

If you sometimes feel like you are being transported back in time in Tubre, there is a good reason for that. Here, there are numerous historical buildings that tell stories of their origin and use. Some of the buildings have been listed as historical monuments in order to preserve their original character as much as possible. In addition to the ruins of Castle Rotund and Castle Reichenberg, the famous Churburg attracts enthusiastic visitors year after year. It is located in the idyllic Vinschgau on a hill and overlooks the imposing Ortler group. The Churburg has been in the possession of the Trapp family for years and is one of the best-preserved castle complexes in the whole of South Tyrol.

From March to October, the beautiful castle opens its doors, and what lies behind it is truly fabulous: enchanted arcades, magnificent gardens, a mystical keep, and the largest private armory in Europe. As part of guided tours, the Trapp family also provides insights into their private rooms, allowing every visitor to see how a noble family lives in such venerable buildings.

The Stairs to Heaven

However, not only historical buildings await culture lovers, but also significant sacred sites. Some of these cultural sites have been combined and made accessible to visitors as part of the "Stairs to Heaven" project. This includes the church of St. Johann in Taufers. The floor plan of the church resembles a Greek cross. Inside, frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries can be admired. Tip: If you spend your holiday in Tubre, you should definitely cross the border to Müstair in Switzerland. The monastery complex of the town is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
