The Kaunertal in the Tyrolean Oberland presents itself as a large nature park and is under nature protection due to its wealth of plants, animals, and picturesque landscapes.
The valley is in close proximity to the Gepatschferner, which proudly bears the title of the "second largest glacier in Austria".
And with the Gepatsch reservoir, there is also a reservoir for the Kaunertal power plant.
The main river of the Kaunertal is the Faggenbach, which originates south of the Weißseespitze - a mountain in the Ötztal Alps - and eventually flows into the Inn.
Vacation in Kaunertal
Feichten - the hub of Kaunertal
The central focal point of the Kaunertal is the village of Feichten. Here, the Kaunertal Glacier Road - one of the most beautiful mountain roads in Austria - starts its way to the eternal ice. Over 26 kilometers, the road, respectfully integrated into nature, winds its way towards the Weißseespitze and stops at its base - at an impressive height of over 2,700 meters.
After 29 hairpin turns, which especially delight motorcyclists, you finally reach the upper end, having covered an altitude difference of almost 1,500 meters. From the end of the road, you can go even higher. The Karlesjochbahn takes visitors to a platform at over 3,000 meters, where you can enjoy a panorama that is as spectacular as it gets. Here, you can let your gaze wander over three countries: Austria, Italy, and Switzerland.
In addition, a walkable glacier crevasse leads into the ice, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the wonder world of cold. But even those who shiver at the mere thought will find a suitable alternative here: on a level path, a short hiking trail leads to two idyllic mountain lakes, where the fascinating aquatic wildlife can be observed. Lizards, frogs, and amphibians will especially impress the children.
Winter fun on the glacier
From October to June, the Kaunertal Glacier captivates winter sports enthusiasts. On Tyrol's youngest glacier, 54 kilometers of slopes invite skiers and snowboarders. Freestylers will find a snow park that has it all, and adventurers will also find various freeride lines to enjoy. The experience is rounded off with night skiing and night sledding.
Families with children can enjoy a relaxed vacation in the Fendels family ski area, which is nearby. Fendels also has a 4.5-kilometer-long natural toboggan run, where you can descend towards the valley on marked paths.
When the warm season comes again, vacationers will put on their backpacks and explore the numerous hiking trails. The Kaunergrat Nature Park, with its interplay of high mountain landscapes, mountain lakes, alpine pastures, moors, and glaciers, is a perfect subject for amateur photographers.
The panoramic trail "Aifneralm - Falkaunsalm", which leads over the Kaunergrat and the Glockturmkamm, rewards with its dreamlike view.
And the Gepatschhaus in the rear Kaunertal is the starting point for many summit tours, such as to the Weißseespitze, the Glockturm, or the Vorderen Ölgrubenspitze. By the way, there is also a climbing garden in the Fernergries, not far from the hut.
A special tip for gourmets: during the traditional "Almherbst", inns and hotels offer typical regional delicacies. And hiking always makes you hungry anyway.
