Nature paradise in an impressive setting

Ehrwald

The Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena is not only a very special part of Tyrol due to its extraordinary geographical location – it is located directly behind the Fernpass. Idyllic mountain villages are lined up here, and many viewpoints offer a view of the impressive mountain world, which acts like a living picture frame. Ehrwald is one of these small and larger settlements. At the municipal level, the village belongs to the district of Reutte and currently has around 2,500 inhabitants. Ehrwald is located at the foot of the Wetterstein mountain range at an altitude of 994m and is a traditional mountain village. All around, the clarity and power of the Alps unfold in their most original form.

To the east of Ehrwald, the Zugspitze towers, and to the south, two mountain ranges border the tranquil village: the Mieminger Kette and the Wetterstein mountain range. Those who can no longer resist the call of the mountain will soon embrace the nearby Ehrwalder Almbahn. It transports nature lovers and active holidaymakers directly to a height of 1500 meters. The mountain station serves as a starting point for many hikes and mountain tours. The level of difficulty varies depending on the duration and route. For example, the Ehrwalder Almsee can be reached in just a few minutes' walk. This reservoir was built in 2008 and contains a proud 70,000m3 of water on a water surface of 11,600m². It is a popular destination, especially for families and active holidaymakers. Around the lake, you can relax and enjoy the panorama.

For those who wish, continue hiking to the Igelsee, Seebensee, or Drachensee. All of them can be reached on foot from the mountain station of the Ehrwalder Almbahn within a maximum of 2.5 hours. Experienced climbers and trained hikers may be more drawn towards the Zugspitze. This nearly 3,000 meter high jewel of the mountain world can be conquered from the valley station of the Almbahn. However, it is important to consider the right equipment, weather conditions, and individual fitness. The path leads "Am Brand" (2,120m) and past the Feldernjöchl (2,041m), over scree and snowdrifts to the Zugspitze. The summit can also be reached more comfortably with the glacier lift. However one chooses to make the journey, the destination offers a magnificent view of the peaks of 4 different countries.

Magical moments

Once a year, the valleys of the Ausserfern region become especially magical. Therefore, one should definitely plan to visit during the time of the summer solstice. At the end of June, countless summer fires are ignited here in the valley (including in Ehrwald). However, these are not ordinary fires. Figures and symbols from religion and mythology are ignited at more than 8,000 different fire sites, such as images of Christ, crosses, and roe deer. The impressive spectacle begins at nightfall and ends late at night.

Hölltalschlucht

Hölltal? The name may initially be misleading, as it certainly does not take you into the devil‘s realm. Quite the contrary – a hiking trail leads you right into the silence, a peaceful place in nature, where only the occasional sound of trees, water, or animals can be heard.

Tyrol is rich in crafts and craftsmanship. But while today access to crafts and to education and apprenticeship is relatively easy and open to everyone, for centuries it was regulated by a strict guild system.
