One of the popular holiday destinations in the Pitztal is the municipality of St. Leonhard. It stretches from 1182 to 1783 meters above sea level and is one of the largest municipalities in Tyrol in terms of area. Most settlements are located on the inside of the Pitztal; in addition to the main town of St. Leonhard, there are also a few scattered smaller hamlets. Some of them are already high up on the mountain in extreme slopes. St. Leonhard is appreciated by many vacationers because of its proximity to the Pitztaler Glacier. The fact that the climate here is already rough and alpine doesn't bother enthusiastic active holidaymakers.
In both summer and winter, the idyllic village is an ideal starting point for leisure activities in the surrounding nature. The rear Pitztal is considered a hidden gem by mountaineers. Thanks to the tireless efforts of various alpine clubs, the infrastructure is very good - mountaineers will find huts at regular intervals that provide shelter. Particularly popular with hikers: the ascent to the highest mountain in Tyrol, the Wildspitze at 3774 meters above sea level.
In winter, the region around St. Leonhard presents itself as a paradise for winter sports enthusiasts. Whether carving, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, or tobogganing - everything is possible. The Pitztaler Glacier and the Rifflsee ski area are nearby. In total, there are 68 kilometers of slopes available to vacationers and locals, which offer absolute snow reliability from September to May.
Vacation in St. Leonhard in the Pitztal
The highest coffee house in Austria
In the autumn of 2012, the Pitztaler Glacier will become even more attractive. The Wildspitzbahn will then take its passengers to a height of 3,440 meters - the highest point in Austria that can be reached by cable car. Once you have arrived at the top, you will be amazed. The panoramic view of the Wildspitze and 50 other peaks that rise over 3000 meters is truly breathtaking. You can also visit a café of a different kind from autumn 2012. The Cafe 3440 is an architectural masterpiece at 3440 meters above sea level. From a cantilevered terrace, you can enjoy the alpine scenery. The mountain world is also the focus in the interior of the café: generous glass areas allow for a beautiful all-round view.
Those who wish can get to know the natural jewel of the Pitztaler Glacier better. In July and August, guided tours to the mysterious glacier ice caves are offered twice a week. Together with a professional mountain guide, you embark on a circular hike that provides insight into the powerful world of the glacier. Vacationers can admire glacier caves, glacier mills and gates, as well as rocks that have been "carved" into a unique shape by the glacier.
Leisure paradise Pitztal
One thing you can do particularly well in the Pitztal: experience the world from above. From the unusual bird's eye view, the valley shows its most beautiful side. This special experience can be had while paragliding or hang gliding. The Hochzeiger and Rifflseegebiet lure with ideal weather conditions, and many vacationers dare to take a tandem jump with a qualified instructor. This is an experience that you will remember even after the vacation is long over. On the other hand, it is a bit quieter at Lake Stillebach in St. Leonhard - here, the Pitztaler water world delights.
