Summer in Matrei is the season for hiking and biking. From idyllic walking paths and themed trails - such as the first water exhibition trail in Europe or the "Path of the Senses" - to high-altitude hikes and summit tours to the three-thousanders of the main Alpine ridge: Matrei offers countless hiking opportunities for all levels. A special holiday experience is the Große Tauerntreck, a three-day hike through the Venediger Massif with overnight stays in tent camps and Haflingers carrying the luggage.
For bikers, there are plenty of cycling paths and mountain bike routes to really let loose. In addition, Nordic walking, climbing, rafting, kayaking, paragliding, and tennis are part of the leisure activities for your summer holiday.
In winter, Matrei am Großglockner entices with one of the most beautiful ski areas in Tyrol. Since 2008, there has also been a direct connection to the Großglockner Resort Kals, offering a total of 110km of well-groomed slopes for skiing up to 2,600m above sea level and a fun park for snowboarders. Unspoiled winter fun is guaranteed! In addition, there is a wide selection of beautiful cross-country ski trails and four toboggan runs. Winter hiking, snowshoeing, and ski touring are other attractions for a beautiful winter holiday.
As for sights, Matrei is especially known for its many churches and chapels. Outstanding among the 41 churches, chapels, and wayside shrines are the Romanesque St. Nicholas Church (12th century), the classicist parish church, and the rock chapel in the Gschlößtal. A visit to the "Medaria" local museum with an interesting exhibition of cultural historical objects and a mineral collection is also worthwhile.
