Vacation in Hochpustertal / East Tyrol

The picturesque Puster Valley runs in a west-east direction from the Lienz Klause in East Tyrol to the Brixen Klause in South Tyrol. The Austrian part and the border region on the South Tyrolean side are called Hochpustertal. The East Tyrolean Hochpustertal includes the region between Sillian and Anras as well as the northern side valley to Innervillgraten and the region towards Lesachtal to Obertilliach. Nestled between the South Tyrolean and Lienz Dolomites, the impressive mountain landscape primarily attracts mountaineers and nature lovers.

Summer in Hochpustertal

Hikers and mountaineers will find everything their heart desires. Cozy routes for all age groups lead to the highest inhabited alpine pastures in Austria. Special family and adventure trails pique the curiosity of children and offer fun and adventure along the way. Animal lovers will enjoy the llama or Haflinger trekking, where the animals carry the luggage. Fit mountain enthusiasts go on multi-day mountain hiking adventures and stay in mountain huts. For the physical exertion, everyone is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views and unforgettable holiday memories.

For climbers, there are a variety of free climbing routes, via ferratas, and plaisir routes leading up the rugged cliffs to dizzying heights.

The region is also very popular with cyclists and mountain bikers, who explore remote valleys and high plateaus and let off steam on forest roads, trails, and single tracks in the mountains.

The valley is a hidden gem among bikers. The winding mountain and pass roads are perfect for motorcycle holidays.

The well-kept greens of the Dolomitengolf golf club are set amidst the magnificent backdrop of the Lienz Dolomites. Paragliders enjoy the rugged cliffs, green alpine meadows, and magnificent views from high above. In summer, you can also enjoy swimming, Nordic walking, horseback riding, or experience the water-rich nature in a raft, kayak, or canoe.

Hochpustertal in winter

The snow-covered peaks exert an irresistible charm on mountain sports enthusiasts in winter. Guests will find the best conditions in the Hochpustertal ski areas. Well-groomed slopes, beautiful slopes, snow parks, ski schools, equipment rentals, toboggan runs, and of course, traditional après-ski offerings await. For those who prefer to make their own tracks in the snow away from the hustle and bustle, there are numerous wonderful routes for ski touring and snowshoe hikes. After the ascent to Hollbrucker Spitz, Öfenspitze, Rote Kinkele, Regenstein, or Große Degenhorn, there are wonderful descents. Cross-country skiers glide through the enchanting winter landscape on the Grenzlandloipe Obertilliach, the Grenzlandloipe Kartitsch, the Höhenloipe Anras, or one of the many other trails.

Wellness

A visit to the Tyrolean Bauernbad "Aigner Badl" in Abfaltersbach or the Alm-Kneipp Winkeltal in Außervillgraten revives tired spirits.

Excursions and sights

On the Pustertaler Höhenstraße lies Schloss Anras, which dates back to the 13th century. The historic castle was extensively renovated in the 1990s. Special exhibitions are regularly organized. During a visit, you can learn interesting facts about the cultural-historical development of Tyrol or admire artistic works. In the Hochpustertal, there are also numerous churches and chapels worth seeing, such as the Basilica and the monastery Maria Luggau in Obertilliach, the Old Parish Church in Anras, the Annakapelle in Sillian, or the Bacher Kapelle in Kartitsch.
