How did I come to this hut?

Since I have been managing the highest refuge in South Tyrol, the Becherhaus (Kaiserin Elisabeth Schutzhaus auf dem Becher), with my family for 13 years, we were very happy to take over the beautiful Magdeburger Hütte in the summer of 2015. My wife Elisabeth was immediately enthusiastic and is in charge of the kitchen as she did before.

We are looking forward to welcoming many mountaineers who feel at home with us at the hut.

What do you like about this job?

I really enjoy the contact with people and life in the mountains. You always learn something new and have new experiences with other people.

No two days are the same

Even in the preparation for the upcoming season, my son and I have to hike to the hut on foot and with snowshoes. There, we first have to shovel 2m deep to be able to open the entrance door. The terrace is also cleared of snow so that the helicopter can unload the nets with the food before the opening.

Once all of this is done, the drinking water and electricity supply must be put into operation. This is usually not so easy. Usually, we have to shovel over 3m deep to find the connection for the drinking water pipeline. Once the hut has electricity and water, it is ready for use.

My favorite dish at the hut

Magdeburger Hüttenmakkaroni

  • Italian macaroni
  • some ragù
  • some mushrooms
  • 2-3 slices of ham
  • some cream
  • secret ingredients

At the beginning, cook the macaroni al dente. In a separate pot, heat the ragù with the mushrooms, ham, cream, and secret ingredients. Once the macaroni is cooked, add it to the pot of Magdeburger Hüttenmakkaroni sauce and stir it all together vigorously. Done. Enjoy your meal, wishes the chef and manager Elisabeth!

From the Magdeburger to the Teplitzer Hütte

Very rewarding but quite challenging tour for mountain professionals.

From the Tribulaun to the Magdeburger Hut

At the foot of the Tribulaun rocks, at 2,369 meters above sea level next to Lake Sandes, lies the Tribulaun Hut. It is an ideal base for hikes in the Stubai Alps, such as continuing to the Magdeburg Hut.
