Hahntennjoch

The road over the 1,894 meters high Hahntennjoch is one of the northernmost Alpine crossings. On just under 30 winding kilometers, and with one or another narrow spot, it connects the two towns of Imst in the Upper Inn Valley with Elmen in the Tyrolean Lechtal.

The pass in the Lechtal Alps is a veritable motorcycle paradise with its winding but well-built road and a total of 15 hairpin bends. Especially since the toll-free road is also closed to trucks, buses, and caravans. The average gradient is about 7 percent, both uphill and downhill, with the up to 19% gradient on the east ramp from Imst to the pass height posing a certain challenge for many motorcyclists. Since the pass road is very popular with bikers, you can also expect increased police checks here!

Summer & Winter

The Hahntennjoch, which was created by just 10 construction workers (!) almost entirely by hand from 1948 to 1969, has now become a popular excursion route. The former gravel road has been gradually widened and paved and now offers a good selection of dining options for two- and four-wheelers. On sunny weekends and during the holiday season, the Hahntennjoch is often heavily frequented, but during the week, driving on the alpine pass is a true pleasure. The pass road is usable from Pentecost until the onset of cold weather, which means there is an official winter closure between the months of November and April. After storms, delays or closures must also be expected, as there can sometimes be mudslides here. In these cases, however, an automatic warning system switches the traffic lights to red at the entrances. An alternative alpine crossing is also possible via the more northerly Namlos Pass.

Highlights in Imst

The Tyrolean alpine city offers a variety of attractions throughout the year. For example, hikers and walkers should visit the Rosengarten Gorge: here the Schinderbach winds from the so-called "Blue Grotto" down to the Johanneskirche, overcoming a remarkable 200 meters in altitude. Those interested in culture should not miss the "Imster Schemenlaufen" - certainly one of the most beautiful carnival customs in the Alps. In addition, the town attracts with traditional open-air concerts, autumnal cattle drives, or the now indispensable "Tiroler Adlerfest".
