Ski Tour: Noon Gap

Deep snow skier - Ski tour
Deep snow skier - Ski tour

Difficulty level: Moderate
Altitude difference: about 1,300 meters
Total ascent time: about 3.5 hours (without a break, at a good walking pace)

With its characteristic peaks, the Dolomites are an indispensable part of the South Tyrolean mountain landscape. The natural beauty of this mountain range is particularly evident on a ski tour to the Mittagsscharte - or Furcela de Mesdi. With views of the Geisler Peaks, the Plose and the Piz Boè, as well as the Sella Group, the Villnösstal and the Grödental.

The starting point for this tour is Ranui in the mentioned Villnösstal. From here, you initially follow the not too steep path along the sled run (path No. 28) towards Broglestal. For a while, you follow the course of the Klieferbach, before crossing the bridge and following the forest path until you take the path towards Mittagsscharte and Broglesalm at the signposted junction. Follow path No. 29 through the dense forest until you reach above the tree line. Shortly afterwards, you will reach the Adolf Munkel trail. Numerous hairpin bends and increasingly steep terrain now demand your fitness as you continue to climb towards the saddle.

After the last very steep section, you will have reached the Mittagsscharte and are now at an altitude of 2,597 meters. At the top, you can rest on a sun bench and take in the impressive panorama.

Due to the very steep slope just before the Mittagsscharte, this tour requires secure footing. However, the fairytale-like beautiful Dolomite landscape is more than worth the effort.

The descent usually follows the ascent route. However, for those looking for variety, you can ski down the lower part of the cirque on the Adolf Munkel trail, through the forest to the Gschnagenhardtalm and further to the Geisleralm, from where you can return to Ranui along the sled run, where the tour started.

The best time for this tour is from February to April, but if there are suitable snow conditions, an expedition can also be planned earlier.

Ski tours require knowledge, experience, fitness, good planning, and appropriate equipment. Please also inform yourself about the current avalanche warning level before each ski tour and consider the "Stop or Go risk management" by Michael Larcher and mountain guide Robert Purtscheller, recommended by the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV).
