Wolfsthurn Castle / Castel Mareta: Hunting and Fishing Museum

Above the church village of Mareit, the mighty Castle Wolfsthurn rises, where since 1996 the South Tyrolean Museum of Hunting and Fishing, as part of the Provincial Museum of Ethnography in Dietenheim, has found its seat.

Three floors house three exhibition areas. In addition to hunting and fishing from a cultural-historical perspective, the tour also leads through the stately rooms of the castle preserved in their original condition, giving an impression of noble life in the 18th and 19th centuries. Museum educational activities are located in the basement. A path about 1 km long on the themes of forest and water leads from the village to the castle. It is accessible with strollers and wheelchairs.

Wolfsthurn Castle in Mareit is the only baroque castle in South Tyrol where visitors can immerse themselves in the world of the baroque era. In addition to the fantastic courtyard, one can also admire the hunting room and the baroque ballroom in the stately castle.

The complex was first mentioned in the 13th century, with "Wolfsthurn" being named as the seat of the so-called "wolves", who were ministers of the Counts of Tyrol. In the 18th century, the castle passed to the von Sternbach family, and Franz Andreas von Sternbach had the former defensive structure transformed into a magnificent

Provincial Museum of Hunting and Fishing

Since 1996, the castle also houses the Provincial Museum of Hunting and Fishing, where visitors can learn a lot about the leisure activities of the nobility, especially fishing and hunting. In addition, there is also the opportunity to explore the hiking trail "Forest and Water", where one can get to know the flora and fauna. The visitors are introduced to the jumping distance of the game with the help of a jumping facility, and along the educational trail, there is also a reconstructed wolf pit, a high seat made of local wood species, a pond with primary plants, and a viewing platform. Close to the castle is also the Gilfenklamm, which is also worth a visit.
