Catinaccio / Rosengarten - Dolomites South Tyrol

The Rosengarten is probably one of the most famous mountain massifs in the Dolomites. It is surrounded by numerous myths and legends, the most famous of which is probably the legend of the dwarf king Laurin and Dietrich von Bern.

King Laurin's Enchanted Rose Garden, which is reported in this legend, is said to be located right here and gave its name to the entire mountain range. This seemingly atypical name for the Alpine region has been documented since the 15th century, but the actual roots are likely in the word stem "ruza," which indicates a scree slope. The Ladin name "Ciadenac" also means "scree basin."

The Rosengarten Mountains extend in a north-south direction between the Sciliar Group and the Karer Pass. It is partly part of the Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park and since 2009 also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites. The highest peak is the Kesselkogel at 3004 m. The actual "garden" is indeed a scree slope, framed by the Laurin walls, the Rosengarten Peak and the legendary Vajolet Towers. Especially the latter are among the most sought-after climbing mountains in the Alps.

In general, the Rosengarten Mountains are one of the most beautiful, diverse and scenically impressive hiking areas. A wealth of well-marked trails crisscross the terrain. From leisurely paths at the foot of the mountains to gentle alpine paths and alpine climbs up the rocks, you can find everything your heart desires here. Climbing enthusiasts can expect via ferratas of all difficulty levels, including some of the most famous in the Dolomites, such as the Laurenzi or Masaré via ferratas.

Natural jewel for hikers and climbers

A dreamlike – and easily accessible on a leisurely hike – destination is also Lake Carezza, probably one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in South Tyrol. Surrounded by dark forests, it lies there like a sparkling emerald. Its Ladin name is Lec de Ergobando, which means “Rainbow Lake”, because depending on the light, it shines in many colors. There is also a legend about the lake involving a water nymph and a sorcerer...

The Rosengarten Mountains are a charming holiday area all year round. Especially in spring and early summer, when the meadows and alpine pastures are in full bloom, this natural gem is incredibly appealing. But even in autumn, with its colorful foliage, it creates a magnificent and atmospheric picture in the landscape.

P.S.: The Laurin legend also “explains” one of the most beautiful natural spectacles in the Alps. King Laurin has indeed cursed his rose garden so that no one should ever see it again, neither by day nor by night. However, since he forgot about dusk, the roses bloom anew at sunset.
