The Eggental is one of the most popular holiday regions in South Tyrol. The district of Obereggen is located at an altitude of 1550 meters and is part of the St. Nikolaus/Eggen fraction of the municipality of Deutschnofen. Here, tourists can enjoy adventure and relaxation at the same time. The impressive panorama of the Latemar, Zanggen, Weiß- and Schwarzhorn mountains not only provides a special atmosphere for sporting activities, but also for relaxing walks.
Mountain idyll in Obereggen
Winter sports from December to April
In winter, 49 kilometers of slopes offer true skiing pleasure. Modern ski lifts take the holidaymakers up to the starting point. If there is not enough natural snow, artificial snow ensures exuberant fun on the slopes. The ski area opens at the end of November with night skiing and remains open until the beginning of April.
Hiking, cycling, climbing
In summer, there is a lot going on in the municipality. For example, hikers get their money's worth here. They have two options: either they explore the surroundings on their own or participate in organized tours. The tourist association offers various tours, such as an herbal and flower, a geological, and a summit hike. The trails are also very suitable for mountain biking or Nordic walking, a sport that has become increasingly popular in recent years. For those who lack the necessary motivation: the beautiful view of the mountains will surely help to get the tired bones moving. But buses also go up to the mountains - so you can reach the most beautiful viewpoints without any effort, where many hikes also start.
Even more action can be found in the forest high ropes course. Three varied courses challenge the visitors. Here, everyone has fun: with the different levels of difficulty, the high ropes course is suitable for children or adults as well as for older and younger people.
Sightseeing and events
Those who want to enjoy some culture will find numerous attractions in Obereggen and the surrounding area: examples include Thurn Castle, the Zischgen Kirchlein, or the Gothic parish church of St. Helena in Deutschnofen. A hike to the pilgrimage site of Maria Weißenstein is recommended. Since the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1988, enthusiasm for the monastery has increased significantly. Numerous visitors still flock to the pilgrimage site. The ascent is worth it: from up here, you not only enjoy a magnificent view of the landscape - the monastery with its long corridors is also absolutely worth seeing.
Especially in summer, interesting events take place in the Eggental, such as the forest festival, wine tasting, or the Schupfenfest, which always takes place on the first Sunday in August. You will never be bored here, guaranteed.
There are many accommodation options in the village: small self-catering holiday apartments are also available, as well as apartments or (wellness) hotels.
A tip: Visitors to the region receive the so-called Eggental Card, with which they can not only pick up a guest gift at the tourist office, but also participate for free in various hikes.
