The magic of the pale mountains

Vacation in the Dolomites

The Dolomites are South Tyrol's tourist "heartland". Here are the most famous mountains from the Three Peaks to the Sella, here are the largest and most famous ski areas in South Tyrol at Kronplatz, in Val Gardena, and Alta Badia.

Since 2009, the Dolomites have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The "sub-areas of the Dolomites World Heritage Site form a series of unique mountain landscapes of exceptional beauty," states the reasoning, and anyone who knows the "pale mountains" will probably agree unreservedly. Characteristic of this landscape, which originated about 2.5 million years ago from the coral reefs in the Tethys primeval sea , is the alternation of gentle alpine meadows and rugged, towering rock walls and rock spires.

Getting up early is worth it - this advice is worth its weight in gold, especially during the peak season in the Dolomites. The morning hours not only offer magical light for successful photos, but also the peace and quiet to better enjoy the top destinations before the big rush begins. And enjoy the clear, fresh morning air!

The beginnings of tourism

With the opening of the Pustertal Railway in 1871, the era of tourism also began in the Dolomites. Along the railway line, the first hotels were built, and holidaymakers came from the imperial capital and residence city of Vienna and from all over Europe for summer holidays. Thanks to prominent guests such as Prince Friedrich of Hohenzollern or King Albert of Saxony, it became fashionable to spend holidays in the Dolomites, but also thanks to figures such as Sigmund Freud or Gustav Mahler. The impressive natural backdrop with its rugged, yet incredibly fascinating mountain peaks has made South Tyrol famous worldwide.

Holidays in the Dolomites today

For your dream vacation in the breathtaking Dolomites of South Tyrol, you can expect a diverse selection of top-class accommodations that leave nothing to be desired. Whether you opt for a luxurious 5-star hotel, a first-class 4-star establishment, or an inviting 3-star hotel, there is something for every preference and budget. The range extends from traditional family hotels that offer warm hospitality and a personal touch, to modern themed hotels that impress with unique design and special concepts.

The Dolomites are a paradise for every type of vacation: whether you long for relaxation and want to take full advantage of the diverse wellness offerings, experience culinary highlights in gourmet restaurants, or actively explore nature. Specialized accommodations offer tailored packages for wellness enthusiasts, gourmets, and adventure seekers who want to explore the majestic landscape while moving in the fresh air.

In addition, numerous attractive offers and packages make your stay a great experience. From relaxing spa treatments to exclusive tastings of local specialties to guided tours through the spectacular mountain world, the Dolomites region offers a wide range of activities. Here you will find all our hotels in the Dolomites.

Important places and regions

The main town of the Pustertal is Bruneck. The old, traditional trading town has a lot to offer all year round: markets, festivals, and events fill the squares and arcades with colorful hustle and bustle and almost Mediterranean joie de vivre. In the immediate vicinity is the Kronplatz, South Tyrol's number 1 ski and leisure mountain. Bruneck Castle, which towers visibly over the city, has housed the fifth location of the Messner Mountain Museum on the subject of mountain peoples since 2011.

From the Kronplatz, it is not far to the Gadertal. In winter, the two ski areas are connected by a short ski bus ride. Alta Badia is famous not only as a ski and mountain sports region, but also for its culinary offerings. Alta Badia, like the neighboring Val Gardena, is internationally known for the annual ski World Cup races that take place in December.

At the entrance to Val Gardena lies the Seiser Alm, the largest high alp in Europe with around 57 km². At the foot of the Seiser Alm, you can reach the villages of Castelrotto, the home of the famous "Spatzen", Siusi, and Fiè allo Sciliar. The Sciliar Nature Park also includes the western part of the Rosengarten group, perhaps the most famous mountain range in South Tyrol. This is the setting for the legend of King Laurin and his unfortunate love for the king's daughter Similde. Below the Rosengartenspitze, the legendary - now petrified - garden is said to lie, which only blooms at sunset.

Summer vacation in the South Tyrolean Dolomites

From gentle walks to challenging mountain tours, from picturesque cycle paths to adrenaline-pumping mountain bike tours and via ferratas - the range of activities for active holidaymakers is vast.

A highlight for hikers is certainly the tour around the Three Peaks, the landmarks of the Dolomites. This moderately difficult hike takes you around the impressive rock formations and offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountain ranges. The tour can be completed in about four to five hours.

A variety of other paths and trails wind through the landscape and lead to peaks with evocative names like Sass Rigais, Langkofel, Piz Boé, Lavarélla, or Schlern.

For mountain bikers, the Sellaronda, a circumnavigation of the Sella Massif, is an absolute must. This challenging tour leads over four passes - Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella, and Gardena - and offers not only challenging ascents and rapid descents but also breathtaking panoramas. Thanks to the lift facilities, the tour can also be made accessible to less experienced bikers who want to shorten individual sections.

In the summer, via ferrata enthusiasts are magically drawn to the Dolomites. The Via Ferrata Ivano Dibona is a particularly attractive via ferrata that impresses with its historical significance and spectacular views. It leads over the famous Ponte Cristallo bridge and offers a unique blend of alpine challenge and historical context.

In addition to these tours, crystal-clear mountain lakes also invite exploration, such as the Pragser Wildsee or the Karersee, whose idyllic shores offer perfect picnic spots and invite photography.

Guest opinion from Corinna

I was fortunate to circumnavigate the Three Peaks and visit the picturesque Pragser Wildsee during my vacation, and I can say that these experiences were among the highlights of my trip. The wellness area of my hotel left nothing to be desired. After the hikes, it was a good opportunity to relax and loosen the muscles.

Winter vacation in the Dolomites

This region of South Tyrol, known for its snow-capped peaks and crystal-clear winter air, becomes the ideal retreat for those who want to fully enjoy the winter magic - whether on skis, snowboard, or on foot through the snowy nature.

Val Gardena, also known as Gröden, is a paradise for skiers and snowboarders. Located within the extensive Dolomiti Superski area, it provides access to 500 kilometers of slopes. Here, you will also find the famous Sellaronda. This leads skiers over four Dolomite passes using lifts and slopes.

At Kronplatz, or Plan de Corones, technical perfection meets natural beauty. More than 100 kilometers of slopes await winter sports enthusiasts here. Whether beginner or professional, freestyler or pleasure skier - everyone will find their favorite descent here.

For those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the slopes, the Seiser Alm offers a quieter terrain. The largest high alp in Europe is a paradise for cross-country skiers and snowshoe hikers, surrounded by a panorama that is second to none. The tranquility of nature up here is simply magical. For cross-country skiers, there is the unique "Dolomiti Nordic Ski" cross-country carousel. With a common trail pass, around 1,300 km of trails can be skied in this magnificent nature. The trail network extends from the cross-country skiing centers of Toblach and Hochpustertal to the Seiser Alm and further into Trentino.

The Pragser Tal also offers incomparable snowshoe hikes through idyllic winter landscapes. The gentle sound of snow underfoot, the crackling of frozen trees - a true winter fairy tale.

Not to be forgotten are the charming villages of South Tyrol, such as St. Ulrich in Gröden or Bruneck in the Pustertal. They invite you to relax, discover local craftsmanship, and enjoy the warm hospitality.

Why should I travel to the Dolomites?

  • Fascinating nature and breathtaking landscapes naturally take first place. The Dolomites offer a backdrop that is unparalleled: mighty mountains that reach into the sky, crystal-clear lakes that invite you to linger, and picturesque towns and villages that harmoniously blend into this landscape. Every perspective reveals a new, spectacular panorama that makes the hearts of photographers and nature lovers beat faster.
  • Diverse leisure activities make a vacation in the Dolomites an adventure.
  • Hospitality that comes from the heart is another hallmark of the Dolomites. Whether you stay in a hotel or enjoy a snack at an alpine hut - here, you will quickly go from guest to friend. This warm atmosphere makes the holiday particularly pleasant and inviting.
  • Culinary delights await you at every turn. From hearty South Tyrolean specialties to light Mediterranean cuisine - the gastronomy will delight gourmets.
  • Child-friendliness is also a priority in this South Tyrolean holiday region. Many accommodations are suitable for the needs of families.
  • Pleasant weather & climate ensure that the Dolomites are a suitable destination at any time of year. The summers are warm but not too hot, the winters cold but pleasant - perfect for outdoor activities.
  • Lastly, but no less important: The easy accessibility makes the Dolomites region a good destination for short breaks and longer stays alike.
