Just a few kilometers north lies the main town Sand in Taufers and leads you to the medieval Castle Taufers. This is one of the most beautiful, most powerful, and largest castles in South Tyrol, and annually delights 70,000 visitors with its former drawbridges, the charming castle garden, and 20 impressive showrooms. This market town is not only a place of well-kept tradition, but also of cultural activity: experience the concert series of the Music Summer, or enjoy the street food in July and August.
A special highlight is the climate tunnel of Prettau, unique in Italy, known for its healing effects. Embedded in the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park, surrounded by steep slopes, dense forests, lonely peaks, and wild waters, Valle Aurina offers an incomparable nature experience. The powerful mountain lakes, streams, the wild Ahr, and the roaring waterfalls testify to the untamed power of the mountains.
The mountain health resort St. Johann, the largest village in Valle Aurina, is the starting point for many stimulating mountain tours. Further into Valle Aurina, situated on a sunny hill, is the village of St. Jakob, where all those seeking peace and relaxation in untouched nature will be happy. It is also known for the annual open-air festival with rock concerts and medieval festival atmosphere. At the foot of the mighty mountains, in the head of the valley, lies the dreamy mountain village of Kasern: Here, traditional craftsmanship is still practiced and gives you an insight into the culture of these friendly people.
Tip: The Mining Museum Kornkasten in Steinhaus, once a storage for food for the miners' wages, was converted into a museum in 2000. It displays the Enzenberg collection, which includes wooden models, paintings, mine maps, documents, and finds from the copper mines in Prettau. The conversion integrated modern elements such as a pavilion, a wooden staircase, an elevator, as well as escape stairs and sanitary facilities, marking the transition from the everyday world to the world of the museum.
