Above all, the steep north faces make the trio the most famous image and postcard motif of the Dolomites. Especially beautiful to see in the glow of the setting sun.
Drei Zinnen
The Great Peak is, as its name already reveals, the highest elevation among the three peaks. At 2,999 meters, it just misses the three-thousand-meter mark by a hair, but a view from its summit definitely feels just as sublime. However, what sets it apart from the other two peaks is the fact that it does not have any ice passages. The easier ascent route on the south side almost corresponds to the path of the first ascent in 1869. The ascent over the steep north face, which is a rewarding challenge for experienced climbers, is much more difficult.
The Western Peak is a bit more difficult to conquer. This is due to its overhanging passages on the north face, which have even earned it the nickname "Largest Roof in the Alps."
Funnily enough, the Little Peak with its slender shape is the most difficult to climb. This also explains the first ascent much later in 1881. The youngest of the Three Peaks also has more than a single summit - climbers here also have the opportunity to conquer the Punta di Frida or the Preußturm.
Hiking paradise worth exploring
In addition to climbing, hiking tourism is one of the main activities for visitors. This was already flourishing magnificently at the beginning of the 20th century, but the turmoil of the mountain war significantly dampened its development, as the Sextner Dolomites were also part of the frontline in the battle between Italy and Austria-Hungary.
The most popular hiking trail is the circular route around the Three Peaks - with its gentle inclines, it is also easy to manage for inexperienced hikers. One of the starting points, the Auronzohütte, is ideal to reach by car (toll road from Misurina, large parking lot) or by bus. Mountaineering legends like Karl Prusik or Hans Kammerlander had already fortified themselves in this hut located at 2,333 meters above sea level for their adventure.
Just 30 minutes further, the Lavaredohütte is waiting for your next rest stop. Then it continues on marked hiking trails through the former war zone, where some former soldier shelters and paths, as well as military tunnels, still remind us of the dark times.
Finally, at the foot of the Paternkofel, at 2,405 meters above sea level, the first built shelter awaits your visit - the 1881 built (and destroyed and rebuilt over time) Dreizinnenhütte, which offers sleeping accommodations for 140 people. From here, you can enjoy the best postcard-worthy view of the mighty Three Peaks before returning to the starting point via the wide, well-developed path.
By the way, the Three Peaks are surrounded on all sides by a mountain ring. In this sheltered area, keep an eye out for marmots, snow hares, rock ptarmigans, and chamois, as well as the symbolic mountaineer symbol of nature itself - the Edelweiss.
