Idyllic village at the foot of the Ortler massif

Vacation in Stelvio / Stilfs

It is already an impressive area in which the inhabitants of the municipality of Stelvio have settled. At an altitude of 1300 meters, houses and settlements nestle gently and seemingly effortlessly on the sometimes steep mountain slopes and alpine pastures. The municipal area includes the Suldental and the so-called Trafoier Tal, both of which run along the sides of the Vinschgau. All around, a massive mountain world opens up in all its splendor. Here, nestled in the Ortler-Cevedale group, are the highest mountains in South Tyrol. The summit of the well-known "Ortler" rises to 3905 meters. But the southern side is also impressive: the Stelvio Pass (2758 meters) is a popular meeting point for mountaineers and mountain lovers.

If you want to breathe a little mountain air in a wild and romantic environment, then Stelvio is the right place. In the villages of Stelvio, Sulden, Trafoi, and Gomagoi, numerous accommodations are available for guests. Honest warmth is a matter of course for the hosts, and in addition to ample food with regional specialties, they always have a few insider tips for excursions.

Tip: You should definitely visit the mountain village of Sulden, located at 1840 meters. The mountains of the Ortler group are within reach here - which is also the reason why the small village is so popular with mountaineers and climbers. Even extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner has fallen in love with Sulden and therefore founded his extravagant restaurant "Yak & Yeti" here. There is also a branch of his "Messner Mountain Museums" here, the Messner Mountain Museum Ortles. Underground, you can immerse yourself in a fascinating world of glaciers and ice on 300 square meters. The so-called Flea House at the foot of the Ortler is curious. Here, 13 mountaineers (including Reinhard Messner) "tell" their stories, providing insight into the unusual and dangerous life of a mountaineer.

High up at the Stelvio Pass

The Stelvio Pass is a natural gem of a special kind. It is located at an altitude of 2757 meters and is the highest mountain pass in Italy. During a pass crossing, you can travel from Vinschgau in South Tyrol to Valtellina in Lombardy. Although the pass has been used by the Romans, there has been a developed road since 1826, which - now asphalted - can still be driven today. Anyone who has "conquered" the Stelvio Pass road will never forget this experience. 48 steep curves lead up the mountain. The pass rightly bears the name Panoramastraße, as the Ortler and the Königsspitze are in the immediate vicinity. Once you have successfully overcome the altitude difference of 1900 meters, you will be rewarded with a magnificent view.

In the nature reserve

If you spend your holidays in Stelvio, you should definitely visit the Stelvio Pass National Park for 1 or 2 days. It covers a total of 130,000 hectares, of which about a third is in South Tyrol. Here, nature shows itself in its most original form. The mighty Ortler group with its rich glacier deposits, crystal-clear mountain lakes, and rushing waterfalls is the focus here. You can learn interesting facts in the national park houses, which are part of the nature reserve. They are located in Trafoi, Prad, and the Martello Valley and attract numerous visitors year after year.
