Vacation in Scena

If it's too turbulent in the lively spa town of Merano, you can escape to the immediate vicinity. Schenna is only 4km away and the municipal area actually begins where the city area of Merano ends. The village includes the localities of Verdins, St. Georgen, Schennaberg, Videgg, Unter- and Obertall as well as the village itself. Although all the places are spread over an area of 48km² and between 300 and about 2,700 meters above sea level, they still have one thing in common: they are located on a gentle slope and have more than 300 sunny days per year. Even in winter, the sun shines here between 4 and 6 hours a day. In summer, it regularly puts in extra hours and shines for up to 13 hours on some days.

From Mediterranean to Alpine

In Schenna, Mediterranean and alpine influences mix, and the plant world benefits from this. Palms, cypresses, and fig trees feel almost at home here, and spruces, chestnuts, and numerous fruit trees thrive healthily and splendidly.

  • In spring, visitors are rewarded with a sea of flowers,
  • In late summer, the harvest takes place, and
  • In autumn, the fruits wander onto many plates in the form of a regional specialty.

Lord of the Castle for a day

The history of the municipality has always been closely linked to the history of Schenna Castle. The magnificent residence, which was built in 1350, was from the beginning in the possession of wealthy Tyrolean noble families. Under Archduke Johann of Austria, the castle experienced a heyday. He restored the old walls and modernized them. For this reason, well-preserved furniture and home accessories from the 19th century can still be admired at Schenna Castle today. In addition, the largest private Andreas Hofer collection is housed here, and visitors also get an insight into the history of weapons use and can enjoy some famous European paintings. The castle is privately owned but can be visited as part of guided tours daily, except Sundays.

Tip: At regular intervals, musical, artistic, and culinary events also take place in this magnificent setting. If you are already there, you should definitely plan a visit to the associated mausoleum. The final resting place of Archduke Johann of Austria and his family is an architectural masterpiece – the neo-Gothic building is easily recognizable from a distance.

Fit with Nordic Walking

But with so much cultural enjoyment, does sports activity fall by the wayside? You might think so, but not in Schenna. The gently located area is especially known for its Nordic walking trails. With focused exercise, you can not only fill your lungs with fresh mountain air but also train your whole body optimally. Beginners seek advice from qualified Nordic walking trainers on site, while advanced walkers can start right away. Seven Nordic walking trails are available in three surrounding hiking areas. The 1st Nordic Walking Fitness Park in South Tyrol awaits enthusiastic "Nordic walkers" and those who want to become one in the Schenna-Hirzer-Meran 2000 active recreation area.

Sights in Scena

  • Mausoleum
The mausoleum was built between 1860 and 1869 as a burial place for Archduke Johann of Austria, as well as for his wife and son. The chapel is undoubtedly one of the best sacred buildings erected in the neo-Gothic style.
  • Schenna Castle
The castle can be reached via a bridge and is surrounded by a moat. From Tuesday to Friday, castle tours take place several times a day, and the largest private Andreas Hofer collection, originating from Archduke Johann, is particularly noteworthy.
  • St. Martin's Church
Another interesting building is the St. Martin's Church from the 12th century, consisting of two apses and two octagonal pillars. The church can be visited as part of the art historical tour, which takes place every Tuesday.
  • ArtBank
ArtBank is an art-themed trail designed by the artists Judith Klotzner and Sabine Auer, as well as the gardeners of Trauttmansdorff Castle. Visitors can sit on various park benches, artistically redesigned, and let literature and contemporary art take effect.

Diverse Events

The events that take place here are also varied. In spring, you can visit the weed market, and in the warm season, the musical "summer evenings" are enticing. The vintage car rally "Südtirol Classic" is also very popular, with numerous cult vehicles to admire.

News: Accommodation options

In Schenna, comfortable hotels await guests, as well as guesthouses that focus on a personal atmosphere. Self-caterers can also rent a vacation apartment or an apartment. A very special experience is a holiday on a farm, where you have the opportunity to participate in farm life.

Merano once again hosts a city museum, which was opened in the impressive historical ambiance of the Palais Mamming. However, the palace alone could not accommodate the extensive collection, so it was not only lovingly restored, but a new part of the museum was also created, which was integrated directly into the Küchelberg behind it.
