Vacation in Tirolo near Merano

Tirolo / Dorf Tirol is located above the sunny vineyards above the spa town of Merano in the heart of South Tyrol. The hospitable South Tyrolean municipality has around 2,450 inhabitants and extends from Zenoberg at around 600 meters up to the Texel Group Nature Park and the Spronser Lakes at around 2,500 meters above sea level. Such a difference in altitude also offers a diverse landscape. Further down, it has a Mediterranean touch with palm trees, oleanders, and cypresses, while in the higher elevations, you can find alpine conifers, typical alpine flowers, and snow-covered mountain peaks until early summer.

Every year, tourists from all over the world are drawn to the holiday resort, whose history is significantly "told" by Castle Tirol, the former seat of the Counts of Tyrol. Here, you can also take a little journey through time: historical buildings and legendary places await at every turn, providing insight into long-forgotten times. The sun-drenched municipality, located in a magnificent mountain world, is suitable for an active holiday in summer and winter.

In the milder seasons, the surroundings invite you to relax in a wellness holiday, go hiking, climbing, paragliding, and mountain biking. Did you know that there is a 70-kilometer long and well-marked network of trails around Tirolo / Dorf Tirol?

Vacation in Tirolo

But culinary enjoyment is not neglected either: excellent restaurants, cozy inns, gourmet hotels, wellness hotels, and romantic hotels ensure exemplary catering for their guests. A delightful highlight in summer is the annual event Sterne, Schlösser und Almen (Stars, Castles, and Alpine Pastures). This event will enchant connoisseurs. Five chefs with the coveted Michelin stars cook at five different alpine pastures and five castles. They use only the best ingredients, directly from the region, to create special culinary delights. Enjoy your meal!

Sights in Tirolo

Castle Tirol

The imposing castle named Castle Tirol majestically sits on a hill and is allegedly responsible for the name "Dorf Tirol" (Village of Tirol). The castle was built around 1140 and served as the stately residence of the Counts of Tyrol. Over the decades, the castle fell into disrepair, and it was not until 1919 that it came under the care of the Italian National Monument Office. After numerous renovation works, it was taken over by the South Tyrol region and is still actively used today. Not only is the regional museum located here, but special events and artistic exhibitions also take place regularly.

Parish Church of Tirol

The oldest mission and John's baptism church in the area is located in Tirol and was initially in the Romanesque style, but later expanded with a Gothic choir. Noteworthy are the baptismal font made of white marble (from Laas) and the impressive organ with many old metal and wooden pipes.

Brunnenburg

Also located halfway between Tirolo / Dorf Tirol and Castle Tirol is the magical Brunnenburg, which houses an interesting agricultural museum and is publicly accessible to visitors. Concerts and readings also take place here regularly.

Tip: A visit to the Burglehenpark at the entrance to the village. This beautiful park, opened in June 2002, houses the steel horse named "Jakob," which was constructed by the South Tyrolean artist Franz Messner as a combination of a play device and artwork. Many benches surround the idyllic natural pond, inviting visitors to linger and dream. While parents enjoy the 360-degree panoramic view, the little ones can let off steam on the play horse "Jakob." A visit to the local Bird Care Center is also recommended. Here, there are bird flight demonstrations and an exciting educational trail describing the habitat of the proud birds of prey.

Hiking Pleasure

The beautiful surroundings are perfect for numerous hikes and nature experiences. It is essential to plan a trip to these destinations.

  • Spronser Seen. At over 2,500 meters above sea level, there are ten crystal-clear mountain lakes that together form the largest plateau of lakes in the Alps.
  • Also worthwhile is a hike to the typical Muthöfen, which bear witness to the peasant culture and way of life and still tell the story of the country's history today.

News

Winter begins early in the fall, and you can start your ski vacation very early. Cool weather and lots of snow ensure great slopes at around 2,500 to 3,200 meters in altitude. In addition, there are four other ski areas around Merano. You can also enjoy the fresh air while cross-country skiing or snowshoe hiking. A visit to the Merano Christmas Market, which opens at the end of November, is also great. A dip in the Merano Thermal Baths is also relaxing. Wellness is highly valued in the Merano region. A wellness hotel is easy to find. But a vacation is certainly also successful in another beautiful hotel or a good accommodation in a holiday apartment.

Merano once again hosts a city museum, which was opened in the impressive historical ambiance of the Palais Mamming. However, the palace alone could not accommodate the extensive collection, so it was not only lovingly restored, but a new part of the museum was also created, which was integrated directly into the KĂŒchelberg behind it.
