Sustainable vacationing in the Etschtal

Gargazzone / Gargazon

The municipality of Gargazzone / Gargazon, also known as Gargazzone in Italian, is located in the south of Merano, about 14 kilometers from the popular spa town. Although the village has good transport connections, it is still somewhat secluded, which is appreciated by both locals and tourists. There are no more than 1600 inhabitants living here at an altitude of about 267 meters. As small as Gargazzone / Gargazon may be, the village still has its own landmark. The Kröll Tower stands like a guardian above the village, built in 1240 by Bertold Chrello von Trautson. It once served as a watchtower and a defensive tower, but over the centuries it was increasingly exposed to decay. Thanks to extensive renovation work, it soon regained its original robustness. It still stands protectively on a hill today and has even earned a place in the municipal coat of arms.

The Merano region around Gargazzone / Gargazon not only has a cultural, but also a natural wealth. A popular destination for hikers, for example, is the 7-stage waterfall, which carries impressive amounts of water, especially after a rainy period. Enthusiastic cyclists can also join the Adige Cycle Path here, which extends from the Reschen Pass to Verona and offers numerous beautiful stages. You should have a little stamina for guided week tours, especially for guided week tours. Together with other cyclists, you can spend 7 days or longer here, enjoy nature and stop at the most beautiful sights of the region.

Water march!

In the middle of Gargazzone / Gargazon, a paradise for water rats has been created. The natural pool Gargazzone / Gargazon has a total area of 12,000m2 and an impressive water landscape. The special feature of this water world: it is a natural pool. This means that the water is not cleaned with the help of various chemicals. Natural plants, which are planted around the swimming areas, keep the water clean. Deposits and dirt particles on the bottom are removed several times a week by special equipment, while a deep water well ensures that enough fresh water is supplied. Natural components were also taken into account in the design of the relaxation and sunbathing areas: gentle hills, shady trees, and green meadows invite you to rest and enjoy.

Tipp: when building the natural pool, special attention was paid to the needs of children and families. Therefore, parents can relax on the sun terrace while the little ones splash around in the safe, naturally designed stream or in the non-swimmer area. This makes the day at the pool an unforgettable pleasure for young and old.

Excursion to Lana

You can experience urban flair in the nearby town of Lana. It can be reached in just a few minutes by car, and once you arrive, it's best to just go with the flow. There is always something going on on the "long" Thursdays in summer.

Art, culture, crafts, music - the city comes to life, and if you want, you can turn night into day with tourists and locals. You should also not miss the open-air plays in Lana. Amateur actors perform demanding plays in the middle of a beautiful panorama.
