Where the Passeier Valley transitions into the Merano region, there is a beautiful place that is still considered a hidden gem by vacationers. Saltusio is home to no more than 350 people - at an altitude of 490 meters, the motto here is "small but nice". For those in desperate need of a break from the hectic everyday life, Saltusio is the right place. Peace and relaxation are a top priority here. In the village itself, there are only a few accommodations, but they are particularly cozy. Whether it's a 4-star wellness hotel or a sociable campsite in the middle of the mountains, all needs are met. Saltusio is known not only for the hospitality of its residents, but also for the distinctive shield farms. The Saltusio shield farm has existed in its current form since the 12th century. Here, tolls were collected in the name of the then Count of Tyrol.
But what makes the so-called shield farms so special? Well, in their uniqueness, they shape the image of the Passeier Valley. They are often located on a small hill and covered with ivy. Many farms also have a tower - these then resemble castles in appearance. Around Saltusio, there are still 11 well-preserved shield farms. Some can be visited on a specially created theme hiking trail: the Passeier Shield Farm Trail starts directly in Saltusio and also passes by interesting chapels and idyllic chestnut groves.
Holiday in Saltusio / Saltaus
Breathe in the mountain air
Why wander far afield when the good is so close? In the case of the vacation spot Saltusio, the "good" is right outside the door. Here, hiking trails extend in all directions. A leisurely walk through the valley, a challenging mountain tour, or gentle hiking on the Hirzer plateau - the decision can be tough. As far as the eye can see, green slopes and lush meadows can be seen.
In the Passeier Valley, there are more than 45 managed alpine pastures, and in the higher-altitude hiking area, there are numerous huts and small taverns where not only hikers can find rest and tranquility. A hearty snack and a refreshing drink are a must, of course. There are also pleasant hiking trails for less experienced active vacationers. For example, the hike to Lake Seebersee takes no longer than 1.5 hours and the starting point is easily accessible by car or hiking bus. A bit more endurance is required for a climb to the Hirzer peak, located at an altitude of 2781 meters.
Experience Adventure
If you want to get to know the beautiful surroundings from above in the truest sense of the word, then a tandem jump with an experienced paraglider is recommended. You glide from the Hirzer hiking area down to Saltusio and are rewarded for your courage with unforgettable impressions. Relaxation after the exciting jump is offered by a subsequent hay bath in Saltusio. The therapeutic effect of such a bath has been scientifically proven, and enriched with dried alpine herbs, submerging in the hay becomes a delight for all the senses.
