Hiking on the archaeological panoramic trail

Anyone vacationing in San Lorenzo / St. Lorenzen should take at least one hike through the Dolomites. The Puster Valley is ideal for exploring nature on foot. Whether it's leisurely walks in the mountains, challenging climbing tours, or mountain bike excursions, how active you want to be is entirely up to you. A recommended hike is the archaeological panoramic trail, a circular route at Sonnenburger Kopf.

In winter, the nearby Kronplatz offers all kinds of snow fun: cross-country and downhill skiing for professionals and beginners, as well as toboggan runs. In total, there are over 100 kilometers of slopes to discover here. 31 ski lifts transport tourists and locals to the mountains.

Journey into Roman times

The ancient Romans also discovered San Lorenzo / St. Lorenzen for themselves, which is why the municipality is home to historical buildings that should be visited by those interested in history. The Roman settlement of Sebatum is worth seeing, with the remains of residential and storage buildings, as well as barracks. The Roman milestone of Sonnenburg is also an attraction, although it is now only a replica of the original find. Those interested in the Roman era should visit the Mansio Sebatum museum in the town hall, which is dedicated to the Roman period of the region and is unique in South Tyrol. The building also houses the Antiquarium, which provides visitors with many interesting facts about the history of San Lorenzo / St. Lorenzen.

Impressive churches

Other attractions include the Sonnenburg, a crypt from the 11th century, the Michaelsburg, built around the year 1000, as well as various churches: The parish church of St. Lawrence is worth seeing. The church houses the famous "Madonna with Child with the Grape" by Michael Pacher. The pilgrimage church in Maria Saalen from 1652 and the St. Margaret's Church in Montal from the 15th century are also worth a visit. Additionally, the church of St. Johann in the hospital in Sonnenburg invites visitors to see an interesting artwork of an oversized Romanesque Christ. Lastly, a visit to the Holy Cross Church in Fronwies, built in 1732, is also recommended.

For those who can't get enough of sightseeing, they might also take a look at the war memorials in San Lorenzo / St. Lorenzen and the war memorial cemetery in Bruneck, which commemorate the fallen from the war of 1809 in Klosterwald and the two world wars.

The municipality offers tourists numerous hotels, from simple 3-star accommodations to luxurious wellness hotels. The quaint inns and farmhouses provide a more traditional lodging option.
