Formerly the dynastic castle of the Lords of Taufers, it came into the possession of the South Tyrolean Castles Institute in 1977. In the 15th and 16th centuries, it was expanded into an extensive residential castle. The completely furnished, very well-preserved castle is one of the largest and most beautiful castles in the entire Tyrolean region. It contains a remarkable collection of furniture and art objects from different periods (12th to early 17th century). About two thirds of the 64 rooms are paneled. The frescoes by Friedrich Pacher in the castle chapel are particularly valuable.
