The special significance of its location arises from the convergence of three countries - Austria, Italy, and Switzerland. Built in the early 14th century, the castle was first mentioned in documents in 1325.
Schloss Naudersberg (Castle)
The palas and the square keep can tell the oldest stories - they are among the oldest parts of the complex. They also experienced the dark period at the end of the 15th century, when the castle was plundered and set on fire. Fortunately, a decision was made to rebuild and expand. In the 16th century, the southern outer bailey with the fortified tower was built, which can still be admired today. The keep was also raised further in the early 16th century and carries a dark past. The prison cells with their heavy iron doors and peepholes suggest that it was not always a cheerful place here. Subsequently, Naudersberg Castle served as a courtroom and remained so until 1919. This is evidenced, among other things, by the still existing former courtroom with its magnificent coffered ceiling from the 15th century. On the second floor of the castle, you will also find a chapel and the prince's room with late Gothic paneling, which was covered with Empire painting at the beginning of the 19th century.
A new beginning
In 1980, the castle passed into private ownership and now houses a museum that tells not only of the building's past but also the history of the dark Middle Ages. As part of a tour, you can also capture the oppressive atmosphere in the aforementioned prison cells and take a look at the former prison kitchen. In addition, the original torture devices in the chambers of horror await fearless explorers. And as you move among all the medieval furniture, you may feel the magical power of the legendary warlock Florian Scheibenstock, which still wafts through the walls. Various works of art remind of regional craftsmanship, the judicial past, and the ancient trade route "Via Claudia Augusta."
Living like a lord of the castle
For brave knights, romantic castle maidens, and fearless ghost hunters, there is also the opportunity to stay at the castle. The historical ambience and the special energy emanating from this powerful place will open up new dream landscapes for you. Two comfortable holiday apartments are housed in the palas and invite you to feel like a medieval castle lord or lady. A castle restaurant in the area of the castle gate ensures your equally important culinary well-being. Because like all other journeys, time travel can also make you hungry.
Since Naudersberg Castle is located at the Reschen Pass, traveling by car is very uncomplicated. It is also recommended to visit the nearby Reschensee, which has a dark history to tell with its protruding church tower.
