The castle ruins were initially the seat of ministeriales originating from Chur, in the 13th century they were then taken over by the Schrofenstein family. Subsequently, the complex was in the possession of the princes and counts of Trautson for a very long time, but in the middle of the 19th century the castle began to decay. Today, only the keep is preserved from the ruins, which was renovated by the private owner. In addition, just below the complex, one can still find the remnants of a stable that also belonged to the castle.

From Perjen, a narrow path leads up to the Schrofenstein castle ruins, from where visitors are offered an impressive panorama of the Landeck basin, which also explains the strategic location of the property very well.
