Of supraregional importance was primarily the Pustertal painting school in the 14th and 15th centuries, which produced such significant masters as Hans von Bruneck or Friedrich and Michael Pacher.
Bruck Castle – built as the residence of the Counts of Görz between 1252 and 1277 – is not only an impressive and fortified castle complex, but also houses the famous Görz Altar and beautiful late Gothic frescoes by the Pustertal master Simon von Taisten in the castle chapel. Since 1942, Bruck Castle has been owned by the city of Lienz and serves as a museum. The in-house collection includes paintings and sculptural works from the Gothic period to contemporary (East Tyrolean) artists, as well as so-called 'folk art' and arts and crafts, prehistoric and early historical finds, and a natural history department. In addition, Bruck Castle houses the Egger-Lienz Gallery, the largest collection of works by the Tyrolean painter, alongside the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum in Innsbruck and the Leopold Museum Vienna.
