Holiday in Achenkirch

Achenkirch is a worthwhile holiday destination in both summer and winter, as it offers something for skiers, snowboarders, hikers, and water sports enthusiasts alike.

Achenkirch is located at an altitude of around 930 meters and extends to the German border, which can be reached by car in just 15 minutes. Around the turn of the century, numerous writers and artists spent their summer months here, including Ludwig Ganghofer, Peter Rosegger, and Ludwig Steub. This led to the development of the town as a very well-known and popular holiday destination.

Recreational fun and nature enjoyment

The Achensee is of course extremely fascinating, and in summer it is very popular among water sports enthusiasts, lying like a radiant pearl amidst the stunning natural surroundings. Clear mountain streams feed the lake, so the water temperatures barely rise above 20 degrees. However, a peninsula allows guests to enjoy bathing in various areas. In addition, Achenkirch offers countless other opportunities to make your holiday varied, including Nordic walking, horseback riding, squash, or tennis. But above all, kite surfers, surfers, and sailors will find a true paradise at Lake Achensee. From here, it is also worth exploring the spectacular mountain scenery around Achenkirch. The Rofan in the east and the Karwendel Mountains in the west are particularly suitable for this, where you can immerse yourself in the stunning Karwendel Nature Park.

The Rofan Mountains are located between the Inntal and Lake Achensee and can be reached by the Rofan cable car. From the top, you not only have a fantastic view, but also enter a hiking paradise, where tours of various levels of difficulty can be undertaken. The Rofanspitze, Roßkogel, Hochiss, and Ebner Joch are particularly popular, but the 5-summit climbing trail that leads hikers over a total of five peaks of the Rofan Mountains is also unique. For beginners, the practice climbing trail near the mountain station is very suitable for learning the basic techniques. Or you can take a trip to the Unnütz, the local mountain of Achenkirch. The mountain is located between Steinberg am Rofan and Achenkirch and is 2078 meters high. Once the partly steep paths have been mastered, you will be rewarded with a unique view of the Rofan Mountains, the Karwendel, and Lake Achensee.

A very special experience is the Achensee Adventure Park, where you can balance on swinging tree trunks or rocking bridges. In total, there are seven courses available to visitors, promising excitement, challenge, and climbing fun for young and old. With the zip line, you can then return to the ground and take advantage of the opportunity to participate in an adventure program. There is also a beautiful 9-hole golf course on a high plateau, which is particularly suitable for beginners.

Extensive winter offerings

But even in winter, a visit to Achenkirch is worthwhile. In the Christlum ski area, there are optimal conditions for snowboarding and skiing. A total of ten ski lifts ensure varied descents. The Christlum ski area is considered one of the snowiest winter sports regions in Austria. In addition, modern snowmaking systems ensure well-prepared slopes between November and April. Cross-country skiers glide along the lake or through the wintry valleys, with a total of 60 kilometers of trails available, so everyone can choose their favorite route. Snowshoe hikes and horse-drawn carriage rides also make the winter holiday in Achenkirch an unforgettable experience.

Traditional and cultural

Agriculture plays a particularly important role in Achenkirch. The life and work of the farmers are depicted, for example, in the local museum at Sixenhof, which was first mentioned in a document in 1361. The farm had to be rebuilt after a fire in 1810. It was renovated in 1984 and the museum was set up. In a total of 21 rooms, visitors can admire numerous exhibits from fishing, hunting, and craftsmanship. There is also a weaving mill, a shoemaker's workshop, and a blacksmith's shop at the farm. Families may also be drawn to the Achenseer Museumswelt, where historical technology and local cultural assets are displayed on a total of 8000 m². Visitors have the unique opportunity to admire around 80 restored vintage tractors and various agricultural implements. In addition, they immerse themselves in local customs and the life and work of the population. Another part is dedicated to the volunteer fire brigade, founded in 1905. In addition, guests can learn a lot about the extraction of shale oil, the Mountain Rescue Association Maurach, the Achensee Railway, as well as Tyrolean flora and fauna. Old radios and cameras can be found in Pepi's Bildlstuben, while the carpenter's workshop presents tools of the carpentry trade. Doll lovers can find approximately 500 handmade dolls in Oma Anni's Puppenstube, which Anna Pramsoler has produced over 25 years.

Accommodation options in all price ranges

In Achenkirch am Achensee, sports enthusiasts and connoisseurs can find a variety of accommodations in all categories. Here, you have the opportunity to stay in a 5-star hotel or on a farm. For families, a well-equipped holiday apartment in a quiet location is also suitable. Visitors can also experience alpine hospitality in the cozy guesthouses and inns of the town.
