Ski tour: Up to Piz Rims from the valley in Schlinig

Fun in deep snow
Fun in deep snow

Difficulty level: Easy to moderate
Elevation gain: about 1,300 meters
Total ascent time: about 5.5 hours (without break, good walking pace)

From Schlinig one starts the approximately two and a half hour ascent to the Sesvenna hut. Due to geographical advantages, the route is usually in a sun window all day. A wide path, which is also popular with cross-country skiers, leads gently uphill to the Schliniger Alm. Soon you reach the valley station of the material cableway, after which the Schwarzwand presents a steeper section, which is however secured with ropes. In case of avalanche danger, you should be particularly vigilant here. Once you have reached the top of the wall, it won't be long before you can see the next station of the tour – the Sesvenna hut.

After a rest in the shelter located at 2,256 meters above sea level (you can also stay overnight here with a reservation), the tour continues to the Schadler – a almost 3,000 meters high peak of the Sesvenna group at the border to Switzerland. From the hut, the trail no longer presents any major difficulties. Once you have reached the Sesvenna gap, keep to the right and follow the signs to the Schadler, which takes about another 20 minutes. The further route to the Piz Rims is also relatively easy to manage. The wide path is initially flat, then leads a little downhill in a northwesterly direction, but then becomes increasingly steeper and after another half hour the magnificent view over the entire Sesvenna group awaits you from the final destination of our tour – the summit of Piz Rims (3,050 meters above sea level).

The descent is via the ascent route – this is the safest variant.

Ski tours require knowledge, experience, fitness, good planning, and appropriate equipment. Please also inform yourself about the current avalanche warning level before each ski tour and pay attention to the "Stop or Go risk management" by Michael Larcher and the mountain guide Robert Purtscheller, which is recommended by the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV).
