Difficulty level: Moderate to difficult
Elevation gain: about 800 meters
Total ascent time: about 3 hours (without break, good walking pace)
As the second highest mountain in Austria (after the Grossglockner), the Wildspitze has not only made a name for itself in the altitude ranking but also on the list of the most beautiful ski touring spots in the country. Be sure to pack your glacier equipment (rope, harnesses, crampons, ice axe) - this tour assumes that you have high mountain experience.
The tour starts at the valley station of the Pitzexpress in St. Leonhard, where a parking space for your car is available. Thanks to the mountain railway, you save part of the ascent and can conserve your energy for the alpine challenges that lie ahead later on.
At an altitude of 2,840 meters, you finally reach the exit point, from where you continue to the Wildspitzbahn. Board the gondola lift, the highest cable car in Austria, which takes you above the three-thousand-meter mark and at the end of which a short descent to the Mittelbergjoch awaits. A steep descent in a southerly direction to the Taschachferner follows. Continue along the flat route heading south. But don't worry, the flat path eventually gives way to a steeper section. Keep to the left and soon the Hintere Brochkogel will appear in your field of vision.
We now orient ourselves towards the east and hike past the Mitterkarjoch until a steep step appears in front of us. Should be no problem for us - so over it and on to the so-called "breakfast spot".
The next stage runs a bit to the south, where the ridge of the Wildspitze begins and you can leave your skis in the depot. The last piece will test you once more - in the use of crampons and in terms of your climbing skills. The view from the summit finally grants you insights over the Bernese Alps to the Schober group in the Central Eastern Alps.
For the descent, you can play it safe and take the ascent path. However, below the Mittelbergjoch, you can dare to ski down to the valley instead of being taken down to the parking lot by the cable car. Move northwest over steep steps to the Taschachfernerhaus and further over a flatter section to the Taschachalm. Finally, via the ski slope, you reach the home stretch and down to the starting point of the tour, the parking lot.
