The Sulzkogel is a three-thousander in the Stubai Alps, not far from the popular winter sports resort Kühtai.
For this tour, it is best to leave your car at the parking lot at the valley station of the Drei-Seen-Bahn. The first destination, which is already clearly visible from here, is the dam of the Finstertal reservoir. The steep steps leading to the dam are relatively easy to manage. From there, the route initially runs along the reservoir until the other end. Take on the left bank of the lake for this. You will have to ascend and descend on the partly relatively steep slopes leading into the lake. The lake in the midst of the mountains exudes a wonderful, idyllic atmosphere that is definitely worth taking the path for.
Once you have reached the end of the lake, continue straight ahead. You will eventually come to a steep section, which you do not have to climb, as it can be bypassed from both the right and left.
After you have left the steep section behind, you will already be on the Gamskogelferner, which provides you with flat terrain for some time. The Sulzkogel is already prominently in your field of vision.
Now continue to hike towards the summit slope. Once you have tackled the slope, be prepared for steeper inclines. In switchbacks, continue towards the summit. Be particularly cautious and forward-thinking here, especially if it has recently snowed, as the danger of avalanches on this section should not be underestimated.
You will now reach a ski depot, from which the last meters to the summit are covered on foot. This may require a bit more effort, but the panoramic view allows you to see a magnificent panorama, including the Ötztal Alps and reaching as far as the Großvenediger Group.
The way down is then again via the ascent route. There isn't much that can go wrong. However, the counter-ascent at the reservoir could be a bit more strenuous coming from this direction. A little tip from the mountain enthusiasts: have your ski skins ready and use them strategically.
