Difficulty level: Medium to difficult
Altitude meters: about 1,680 meters
Total ascent time: about 5 hours (without break, good walking pace)

Among the mountains of the Lüsen Valley, the Lüsener Fernerkogel enjoys a majestic status. It owes this to its powerful shape that overshadows many other elevations in the region. And precisely for this reason, adventurous ski tourers like to tackle it as a rewarding destination.

The end of the road marks the beginning of the tour. As you set off, your car takes a well-deserved break in the parking lot in front of the Alpengasthof Lüsens. Here you can also stay overnight and let the harmonious atmosphere of the former monastery complex have an effect on you.

The ski tour first leads us over a flat area to the end of the valley. This is followed by a steep, rocky section interspersed with hollows and steps. Keep going straight – you will then reach the impressive glacier plateau. Continue straight on flat ground and then turn westward in a generous curve, working your way along the Plattigen Wand.

The gradient soon becomes steeper and leads to a mountain saddle, over which you reach the Rotgratferner. Now your destination is already recognizable in the form of the summit cross visible from afar. Pass the Rotgratferner on a relatively flat path. Once you have reached the ski depot, it's time to unstrap and continue on foot. For the last stretch to the summit cross (about 3,300 meters above sea level), your climbing skills are required – however, it is not too difficult to master, and a panoramic view over the snow-covered peaks, which is truly breathtaking, awaits you as a reward.

Back you go on the familiar trail over the ascent route. However, there is the possibility – assuming good snow conditions – to take an alternative route that also makes the track a bit shorter. Keep an eye out for a steep gully at the Rotgratferner and ski down it along the Plattigen Wand towards the starting point.

The late winter and spring have proven to be a suitable time for this tour.
