In the heart of the Kaiser Mountains, the forces of nature have created a mighty gate that could be a portal to a fantastic parallel world shrouded in legend. In any case, the earthly name is "Ellmauer Tor". Once you have made it to this gateway, an unsurpassable view over Ellmau all the way to the Hohe Tauern awaits you.
But before you get there, you have to cover a path that requires mountain experience and, above all, surefootedness.
You start from the Wochenbrunner Alm parking lot. There is a charge for this, but the fee is already included in the toll.
Follow the forest path and after an easy walk you will soon reach the Gaudeamushütte at an altitude of 1,263 meters - one of several Alpine Club huts in the Kaiser Mountains. After the hut, head north and tackle several steep steps that lead through the Kübelkar. It is not difficult to find the right path here, but you have to be prepared for the gradient to increase and soon become quite steep. This challenging section is immediately followed by a flatter section - and once you have conquered this, the mighty Ellmauer Tor opens up before you.
From the gate, you take the path in a north-easterly direction and pass a relatively steep snow field. The next step is to take off your skis and continue on foot, as you still have to climb to the summit - the Hintere Goinger Halt. For this undertaking, it may be necessary to strap on crampons. If the path is very icy or the snow is very hard, there is a greater risk of slipping. But once at the summit, the view will let you know that it was worth climbing the 2,192 meters at which the mountain peak is located.
As for the descent, there is no difficult choice to make here - the route is the same as the ascent in the opposite direction.
