The best tracks for sledding

Sledding in South Tyrol

South Tyrol offers the best conditions for sledding, and not just in the well-known ski resorts. Throughout the country, you can find wonderful toboggan runs. Sledding is a real popular sport in South Tyrol, enjoyed by young and old alike. In our opinion, sledding is the most beautiful winter pleasure of all. You go up the mountain with a cable car or on a healthy hike, and before the descent, it's common to strengthen oneself with a hearty snack at a cozy hut. The downhill ride in the fresh air through the romantic natural landscape can then be taken leisurely or with a bit of thrill, but it's always a huge fun.

Pure winter pleasure

South Tyrol is naturally also very successful in professional racing sports, both on natural tracks and in the ice channel. The most famous luger currently is Armin Zöggeler, the 6-time world champion, 2-time Olympic champion, and 10-time overall world cup winner. No wonder that in a country with such a great tobogganing tradition, there are naturally also numerous manufacturers of high-quality sleds.

The number of toboggan runs in South Tyrol is legion. Almost everywhere you can find a track – from cozy, family-friendly, and only moderately steep routes to breathtaking sporting challenges. Some toboggan runs even set records: For example, the natural toboggan runs at Rosskopf near Sterzing and on the Plose near Brixen are over 10 km long, the longest in all of Italy.

By the way, you don't have to miss out on the fun of zooming down a hill on a small sled in summer. Sledding has long since developed from a pure winter sport to a year-round pleasure. Spectacular summer toboggan runs and all-season tracks, like the Alpine Coasters in Klausberg, Obereggen, Tiers, and Meran offer fun and action at any time of the year.

Our tip

Especially fun and atmospheric is sledding on clear full moon nights. Night sledding is possible on many toboggan runs, just inquire at your holiday destination.

In the Val Senales, a side valley of the Vinschgau, modern winter sports slopes meet archaic mountain farming traditions. It may be a valley of contrasts, but there is one thing everyone agrees on – the Lazaun toboggan run beautifully reflects the natural composition of South Tyrol.
