For this extra dose of nature, however, you must do without a lift or cable car. Here, your physical fitness is required to reach the summit. Exclusively? No, not necessarily. Because an alternative is offered to you with the "sled taxi", which picks you up from the Matrei am Brenner train station.
For athletic natures, the ascent begins at the Mauthäusl above the Mützens district. The path leads you partly along the toboggan run, partly along the road, which fortunately is not too heavily trafficked.
As hiking time, you should plan about two hours from the Mauthäusl. The ascent is with approximately five kilometers in any case a little bit longer than the toboggan run, which in turn comes to a length of about 3.6 kilometers.
Once at the top, the "Klostergasthaus Maria Waldrast” finally offers a truly divine opportunity for refreshment. The enjoyment of regional specialties perfectly sets the mood for the later descent into the valley.
Directly next to the monastery complex begins the toboggan track. Partly it goes through the forest. With the mostly present snow conditions, advanced tobogganers will cope better than beginners – the course is relatively steep and therefore becomes a challenge especially in case of icing. However, the track is also well secured. It falls into the category "medium difficulty”.
With its own snowmaking system, an effort is made to always get the best out of it, to make the slope pleasure as great as possible.
The dark phase is also used for winter fun. Daily, floodlights provide atmospheric lighting for night tobogganing, which is possible until 11:00 PM.
Those who have targeted the pilgrimage site without a sled do not have to repent – in Maria Waldrast there are several opportunities to rent a sled.
