Enjoy your

Holiday in Umhausen and Niederthai

In the heart of the Ötztal valley lies the holiday region of Umhausen-Niederthai, whose main town, Umhausen, is located in an idyllic valley plain. On a dreamy sunny plateau, you will also find the picturesque villages of Köfels and Niederthai, nestled in a picturesque mountain world. About 20 years ago, radon deposits were discovered in Umhausen, and today guests can take advantage of a variety of therapies with radon-containing water at the spa center. Umhausen is also known for the tradition of "Larchzieh'ns," which is one of the oldest European carnival customs. During this tradition, an unmarried men participate in pulling a larch tree through the village in a procession.

Special features and attractions

Culture enthusiasts will find the oldest church in the Ötztal valley in Umhausen, first mentioned in 1220. The church is dedicated to St. Vitus, and the frescoes, both inside the church and on the outside, are also impressive. The church in Niederthai is also a small gem, with a remarkable baroque high altar. The water wheel in Köfels is of great artistic and cultural significance. It belonged to a sawmill until the Second World War and was saved from decay after the mill was dismantled.

Activities in the summer

About 9000 years ago, the Horlachbach in Niederthai was blocked by a rockfall, causing the water to find a new outlet. This led to the creation of the famous Stuibenfall, a natural spectacle that visitors can experience during a hike. Niederthai also has a hamlet at 1540 meters altitude, which is a perfect starting point for mountain tours of varying difficulty levels. The Engelswand in Tumpen, which is part of the Natura 2000 protected area, is the source of many legends and is also popular as a climbing wall. The Ötzidorf offers an adventurous experience, where the whole family can travel back to the Stone Age and learn about life, economy, and living conditions at that time. Water enthusiasts, on the other hand, can have fun at the Umhausen swimming lake, where the 24-degree warm water invites for a swim.

Activities in the winter

Small but nice: This is the motto of the Niederthai ski area, which has a total of three drag lifts, one connecting lift, and four kilometers of slopes. There is also a ski school and a ski kindergarten for young skiers to spend educational and fun holiday days. Of course, cross-country skiers and winter hikers will also get their money's worth in the romantic mountain village of Niederthai.
