Because a large part of the mountain range is located on Swiss territory in Graubünden, the mountain range is also known as the Münstertal Alps. The Austrian part is located in the northeast of North Tyrol, not far from the Reschen Pass, which connects to the Ötztal Alps. From there, it is also not far to the Silvretta, the Samnaun group, the Ortler group, and the Livigno Alps.
Sesvennagruppe in Tyrol
The Piz Sesvenna serves as the namesake, with a height of 3,204 meters, making it the highest peak among the many local three-thousanders. It is located on Swiss territory but is often climbed from Schlinig in South Tyrol. From the quaint, small mountain village, the route leads first to the Schliniger Alm and then to the Sesvennahütte, before continuing over the Sevennascharte and the glacier section of the Sesvennaferner. After successfully completing the east ridge, the summit celebration is in order. The panoramic view makes the ascent a highlight of mountain tour destinations in the Engadin. An alternative route leads from Taufers in the Münstertal through the Avigna Valley to the top of the mighty mountain.
A peak with triple demand
The Piz Lad (2,808 meters) in the tri-border area of Italy, Switzerland, and Austria plays a connecting role as a border mountain. It also represents the northern endpoint of the Sesvenna group. An ascent tour, not too difficult to manage, starts in Reschen in Vinschgau/South Tyrol. First, it leads to family-friendly terrain to the Reschner Alm. Then, marked hiking trails and paths lead to the final destination at the summit. All in all, about 2.5 hours and not overly much mountain hiking technique are needed for this ascent. Likewise, in appropriate snow conditions, ski tours provide unforgettable winter adventures.
Wintry retreat at all levels
In the North Tyrolean part of the Sesvenna group, the municipality of Nauders above the Inn Valley, between the Finstermünz Pass and the Reschen Pass, is known as a winter sports destination. Furthermore, the winter adventure world on the Mutzkopf (accessible by chairlift and gondola) offers a rich variety for cross-country skiers and for those who want to clear their heads on winter walks. A stop at one of the numerous rest huts is also very supportive for mental well-being and stomach comfort.
The battle for the gorge
Nauders is also an important point on the map of active holidays in the warm season. Of course, winter walks can also be done in a summer setting. But especially in the summer months, the area opens up to mountain bikers who take their sport seriously. Excellent fitness is required for a ride through the legendary Uina Gorge. The alpine crossing starts from Nauders and passes numerous spectacular viewpoints, such as the tower of the sunken church in Lake Reschen.
The Uina Gorge is part of the MTB round tour "Sesvennarunde," which in turn is a section of the Transalp route from Oberstdorf to Lake Garda. Pushing and carrying passages make the ride through the high-alpine terrain an adventurous challenge for every off-road pedal knight.
