One of the higher mountains of the Tux Alps, the Patscherkofel (2,246 meters), is even considered the local mountain of Innsbruck, which is located just a few kilometers south of the city and is connected to the district of Igls by the Patscherkofel cable car. Its characteristic round summit with the tall transmitter tower makes it unmistakable. People are drawn here for hiking, and in winter, the fast ski slopes also attract visitors to the summit.
In 2017, the time had finally come - the old pendulum cable car was retired and replaced by a modern single-cable circulating lift. This also brought a new route. The former mountain station in Patsch and the valley station in Igls are now under monument protection. The Patscherkofel Alpine Garden is also worth a visit. It is located just a few minutes from the new mountain station and proudly bears the title "Highest botanical garden in Austria". If hunger strikes or you simply have time for a coffee break, you can satisfy your culinary desires at the Patscherkofelhaus. The house, which also offers cozy rooms, comes into view already at the mountain station with its stone walls.
Tux Alps
Another representative of the local summit assembly - and also the highest - goes by the name Lizumer Reckner. Many marked hiking trails lead to the southern flank of this 2,886-meter-high mountain, which also offers a magnificent stage for ski tours in winter. Ascents are recommended from the Lizumer Hütte or from the Tuxertal via the Junsbergalm. The Reckner can also be conquered from the Navistal via the Naviser Hütte or the Peeralm. However, it is located in the territory of the Lizum Walchen military training area, and in the event of military maneuvers, the ascent can be prohibited.
The namesake gurgling
Water that gurgles through the rugged rock clefts is said to be the namesake of another mountain in the Tux Alps - the Glungezer (2,677 meters). Here, there is a well-marked ski route that can be completed by ski tourers without avalanche danger. In addition, the Glungezerbahn on the north side opens up a family-friendly winter sports area, crisscrossed by easy slopes. The valley station is located in Tulfes, about 12 kilometers from Innsbruck. You can reach the Glungezerhütte of the Austrian Alpine Club via a 1.5-hour hiking trail from the mountain station, where the Tulfeinalm also has its large sun terrace open for you and the scent of Tyrolean delicacies wafts into your nostrils. Those who refuse to take the cable car can make the ascent from the valley station through the rustic stone pine forest in about 5 hours.
Friends of long-distance hiking trails will also get their money's worth in the Tux Alps. Numerous routes cross the Tux Alps - such as the Dream Path from Munich to Venice (Hall in Tirol - Glungezerhütte - Naviser Jöchl - Lizumer Hütte - Tuxerjochhaus - Plunderling Sattel - Gschützspitze-Sattel), as well as the Tyrolean Eagle Trail, the Via Alpina, and the Central Alpine Trail 02A, which runs from Feldkirch in Vorarlberg along the main ridge of the Central Alps to Hainburg an der Donau in Lower Austria.
