Especially in the Middle Ages and until the 16th century, iron ore was mined in the Schlick, where today one of the most amazing, largest and most modern ski areas in Tyrol is located. Along the Schlickbach stream stood the smithies, where the iron was forged into tools and weapons. In the 17th century, there were 45 smithies in the Stubai valley, whose products were known and valued far beyond the Tyrolean borders.
In 1897, the Fulpmer smithies joined together to form a cooperative, which eventually became the "Stubai Tool Industry" in 1960. Even today, it still produces tools of all kinds and of the highest quality in the Stubai valley: the product range extends from pliers to high-quality knives, from the trowel to the axe, from the spatula to the wrench. In addition, high-quality, internationally valued mountaineering equipment is manufactured.
The history of the Stubaier smithies and the development of the art of forging is dedicated to the Forging Museum in Fulpmes.
It is housed in the Riedlhaus, a former smithy on the Schlicker stream. In addition to numerous documents and certificates, it also shows many examples from the production of the smithies of the time as well as original tools from the 19th century. However, the biggest attractions of the museum are probably the original forging devices from the early 19th century: a grinding machine from the year 1812 and a forging hammer from the year 1836! Its four mighty hammers are moved via a large wooden shaft, which in turn is powered by the water power of the Schlickbach stream. The hammer mill is still almost in its original condition and still operational.
Finally, in the museum, you can also see the "Smith of Fulpmes". This is a beautiful wooden sculpture by the Tyrolean sculptor Ludwig Penz from the year 1916.
The Forging Museum is only open in the summer (June to September) every Wednesday from 2 to 5 pm or upon request!
