The entry into this tour does not yet require great efforts from you. In Maurach am Achensee, you can comfortably get into the Rofan cable car and then let it chauffeur you to the mountain station.
There you will also see the bright wooden shingles of the Erfurter Hütte shining friendly in the sun – one of the few huts in Austria that is open both in summer and winter. (Exact opening times depend on the weather conditions.) There are a few rooms and a mattress camp available for overnight stays.
From the hut, the route then goes downhill along the slope for a bit and soon up again over the Mauritzalm-Hochleger. Then you orient yourself towards the northeast, where you continue to hike over open terrain and idyllic alpine meadows. In a wide arc, you then reach a short steep stretch, where the trained condition pays off. Here you work your way forward towards the Grubascharte – through a varied collection of hillocks and hollows.
Then take the signposted junction to the Grubalacke south of the impressive Rosskopf, which you pass by. This is followed by another short steep stage. After overcoming this small obstacle, you have reached the Grubascharte at an altitude of more than 2,000 meters.
However, we are still a bit away from the endpoint. The next section, which is still ahead, consists of steeper summit slopes that have to be managed in a few hairpin bends at the end. This spot could become a challenge for beginners, unlike the rest of the tour.
Now you have reached the summit - the Rofanspitze (2,259 meters) – and can let the view of the Grubersee and the further peaks of the Rofan Mountains as well as the Sagzahn and the Sonnwendjoch take effect on your soul.
The descent takes place via the ascent route.
About 600 vertical meters are covered during the entire hike. Expect approximately 2.5 hours of walking time.
Also not unimportant: If you do not want to hike all the way down to the valley, please remember that the cable car also has a last valley descent.
