The municipality, with 4600 inhabitants, is the main town of the Val Gardena and a popular destination in South Tyrol. The village includes St. Jakob, culturally also Runggaditsch, Überwasser and Pufels, which are geographically considered part of Castelrotto.

The municipality is famous for its woodcarving – known throughout the world. This craft tradition dates back to the 17th century, when the inhabitants used the cold season to express themselves artistically. Today, genuine works of art are created from wood in Ortisei / St. Ulrich. Such a piece is certainly a great souvenir for loved ones back home.
The village can boast famous citizens: The actor Luis Trenker, musician Giorgio Moroder, and the winter sports athletes Isolde and Caroline Kostner all have their roots in Ortisei / St. Ulrich.
