Soaring high

In the Dolomites, a variety of sports can be practiced: Those who love a challenge enjoy themselves at one of the famous climbing walls, cyclists find their happiness on a mountain bike tour, and those who like to be high in the air enjoy a magnificent view of the landscape while paragliding. Of course, in winter there is no rest: In the Puez-Geisler Nature Park, cross-country skiers and slope lovers can pursue their passion. Whether by gondola, on foot, or by bike: Those who vacation in the Dolomites must venture out into the mountains. For a break, the quaint mountain huts are the perfect choice: Here, hungry hikers are served traditional South Tyrolean home cooking.

The residents of Santa Cristina / St. Christina mostly speak Ladin, the old traditional language of the region. The locals mainly use it when they are among themselves. But: Ladin is still taught in schools. Additionally, media in this language still appear weekly.

Castle and monument

In St. Christina, there is not only nature to discover, but also culture. For example, the Fischburg, located on the border with Selva di Val Gardena. This was built in the 17th century by Engelhard Dietrich von Wolkenstein-Trostburg and used as a summer and hunting lodge. However, today the building is no longer accessible and can only be admired from the outside. Another attraction is the Luis Trenker Memorial, which is intended to commemorate a celebrity from Val Gardena: Luis Trenker, who lived in the 19th and 20th centuries and was, among other things, a mountaineer, actor, director, and author. Also worth seeing is the St. Jakob Church, located above St. Ulrich. The religious site of St. Christina can be reached on foot in about one and a half hours.

It is recommended to stay in one of the quaint inns in the municipality. Here, visitors also have the opportunity to dine traditionally.

Behavior in the High Mountains

High up, surrounded by a breathtaking mountain panorama, different rules apply than down in the valley. The weather turns faster, a planned tour sometimes requires more effort than expected, and a small misstep can sometimes necessitate an early return.
