Montagna / Montan

High above Auer in the Etschtal about 15 kilometers south of Bolzano, the small village is located on a terraced slope surrounded by vineyards and fruit orchards. The charming elevated position at almost 500 meters on the valley shoulder offers a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape. Guests who long for peace and relaxation away from tourist paths are in the right place in Montagna / Montan.

Hiking and Mountain Biking

The village and the hamlets belonging to the municipality, Pinzon, Kaltenbrunn, Glen, Kalditsch and Gschnon, are mostly located in the Trudner Horn Nature Park. The park has the greatest diversity of species of all South Tyrolean nature parks. The wetlands and moors, as well as the partly alpine, partly sub-Mediterranean species, are particularly characteristic of the area. In addition to larch forests, there are also holly trees and emerald lizards, etc. Montan is also home to the idyllic biotope Langensee, where you can learn interesting facts about the flora and fauna.

The region offers numerous hiking and cycling routes, ranging from easy to challenging tours. The attraction of the landscape lies in the combination of intact nature and historical buildings, which bear witness to the long and eventful history of South Tyrol.

Wine

In Montagna / Montan, Pinot Noir (Blauburgunder) thrives, highly valued by experts. The village and the market town of Auer in the valley are located on the South Tyrolean Wine Road. The South Wine Route leads from Kurtatsch southwards to Margreid, Kurtinig and Salurn. From there, it goes back to Neumarkt, Auer and Tramin, and then back to Kurtatsch.
Wine connoisseurs are recommended to taste the local wine. Guests who do not appreciate wine as a drink appreciate the idyllic location of the village amidst the vineyards.

Motorcycle Holidays

Montagna / Montan is also very popular as a destination for motorcycle vacations. In addition to the magnificent panorama that makes bikers' hearts beat faster, the high altitude also has the advantage that temperatures are not as high as in the valley even in summer.

Attractions

The ruins of Castelfeder tell of prehistoric, Roman, and early medieval settlement history. The oldest finds are estimated to be 4,000 years old. The small Stephanus Church in Pinzon houses a very famous winged altar by the master Hans Klocker, the famous South Tyrolean altar builder. The magnificent piece is about 500 years old and is one of the most beautiful and valuable altars in Tyrol. Slightly above Montagna / Montan, the medieval Enn Castle towers. However, the complex is privately owned and cannot be visited inside. In the courtyard, the traditional Castle Concert of the Montan Music Band takes place annually in August.

Further activities

Anyone visiting Montagna / Montan should definitely take a leisurely stroll. You can also let off steam on the so-called "Trim-Dich-Path" along the promenade hiking trail. In addition, Montagna / Montan has tennis and soccer fields, bowling alleys, and a playground for children.
