The market town is located on the left bank of the Adige in the lower Eisack Valley, about 25 kilometers south of Bolzano. Egna / Neumarkt is located on the South Tyrolean Wine Road and is surrounded by idyllic vineyards. Particularly charming is the historic town center, which gives an idea of the town's long history.
Egna / Neumarkt
Sights
The urban-looking center is characterized by historic arcades that were built between 1300 and 1600. Today, a pedestrian zone has been set up here, allowing visitors to explore the winding alleys and beautiful courtyards in peace. Especially on hot days, the arcades provide pleasant shade while strolling. In addition, well-preserved buildings in Venetian style can be found here.
The Gothic parish church of St. Nicholas, located at the lower end of the arcades, has a Romanesque church tower from the 13th century, topped by a Gothic spire.
Opposite the parish church, the so-called "Ballhaus" can be seen. This is a medieval warehouse that testifies to the shipping on the Adige. Also located in the center is the Museum of Everyday Culture, housed in one of the last manor houses of the town. Here, objects can be admired that testify to the bourgeois everyday life of the past 200 years in Egna / Neumarkt.
The church "Our Lady in the Vill" is located in the village of Vill, slightly north of Egna / Neumarkt. The late Gothic church is one of the most beautiful in Tyrol.
On a rock above Egna / Neumarkt in Mazon lies the ruins of Kaldiff Castle. Remains of the fortifications and the gate tower are still preserved. A little south of the town is the Pilgrimage Hospice "Klösterle" from the 13th century. It is one of the few completely preserved hospices in Europe. In addition to well-preserved frescoes, there is a beautiful arcade courtyard inside the complex.
Wine Road
Egna / Neumarkt is located on the South Tyrolean Wine Road. Whether by car, bicycle, or motorcycle, a drive along the southern route of the Wine Road is definitely worthwhile. In Egna / Neumarkt, Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir) is produced. Accordingly, the "International Pinot Noir Symposium" takes place in Egna / Neumarkt annually. Wine lovers can also taste a variety of regional wines, such as Gewürztraminer or Kalterer See.
Hiking and cycling
The surroundings of Egna / Neumarkt invite you to take walks, hikes, and bike tours. A special highlight is the Dürerweg. The historic travel path commemorates the German painter Albrecht Dürer, who stayed in the Adige Valley during his first trip to Italy. The path begins in Laag, just south of Egna / Neumarkt, and offers the hiker unforgettable scenic impressions. Egna / Neumarkt is located near the "Trudner Horn Nature Park," which boasts a unique diversity of alpine and Mediterranean flora and fauna. Especially the moorlands and wetlands are a special feature of this region. The nature park offers numerous marked hiking and cycling routes. Away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, nature lovers find peace and relaxation.
