Cortina / Kurtinig

The idyllic village is located about 33 kilometers south of Bolzano on the right bank of the Adige River in the Lower Adige Valley in South Tyrol. As the only town in the Adige Valley, the historic town center of Cortina / Kurtinig was built on the valley floor, even though the ground there was rather swampy. Until the regulation of the Adige River in the 19th century, the village was surrounded by river arms and was frequently flooded. This led to the designation "Little Venice." Today, the surrounding landscape is dominated by orchards and vineyards.

In Cortina / Kurtinig, the fusion of alpine and Mediterranean influences is immediately noticeable. In the center of the small village is the paved village square with the historic draw well. Characteristic of the townscape are the house vines that climb up the buildings. Traditionally, the house vines are planted at the birth of the oldest child and during farm transfers, renovations, or new construction of farms.

The original flora and fauna of the moorland landscape has been preserved in a biotope on municipal land and in natural islands of some farmers.

The parish church is dedicated to Saint Martin and dates back to the 15th century. The crucifix in the arch above the sanctuary and two paintings from the 17th century, as well as the painted windows by the artist Kastowski from Bolzano from 1989, are worth seeing.

The Teutschhaus inn, especially its stone-framed round arch gate, is also worth a closer look.

And in the nearby Salorno, the Haderburg, a medieval castle ruin, can be visited.

The special alpine-mild climate, around 1800 hours of sunshine per year, ideal rainfall, and good soils ensure that the grapes ripen to excellent quality. The dolomite and limestone soils partly contain glacier deposits of gravel, sand, and loam and are well-aerated. Therefore, they warm up easily and allow the vines to thrive. The large temperature differences between day and night create a particularly strong aroma. Many different varieties are cultivated. Locally, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Müller Thurgau, Sauvignon, Pinot Bianco, and Pinot Grigio are primarily used for white wines. The local red wines include Kalterer See, Lagrein, and Merlot.

Cortina / Kurtinig is primarily a holiday destination for relaxation and recreation. For those who prefer to spend their time more actively, there are opportunities to take bike tours in the surrounding area. The cycle path along the Adige River overcomes significant inclines. The bikemobil Card allows for cost-effective and hassle-free use of trains, bike rentals, and workshops.

The nearby Petersberg Golf Club offers an 18-hole course for passionate golfers.

The nearby Dolomites offer the best conditions for mountain biking, mountaineering, climbing, kayaking, canoeing, canyoning, and more. Lake Caldaro is ideal for swimming, windsurfing, and sailing. During an excursion or hike to Fennberg, you can swim in the idyllic lakes. The nearby cities of Bolzano (13 km) and Merano (30 km) invite you to take a trip to stroll and shop to your heart's content.
