From shady forest gardens with North and South American trees, dense ferns and 'living fossils' to Mediterranean, colorful and fragrant blooming sun gardens, to various examples of historical European garden art - including a proper maze - everything has found its place here. Of course, the scenic richness of South Tyrol is also represented - with a special focus on fruit and viticulture. Numerous indigenous and sometimes already 'forgotten' fruit and wine varieties have found a refuge here, also the largest and oldest grapevine in the world can be admired.
The Touriseum, the tourism museum of South Tyrol, is located in Trauttmansdorff Castle Merano, where 200 years of tourism history are presented in an informative and quite witty and original way. In 2006, the Touriseum was nominated for the 'European Museum Award'. The castle, where Empress 'Sissi' Elisabeth once stayed for summer retreat, and its wonderful gardens with their incredible biodiversity are a unique experience and are not without reason among the most popular destinations in South Tyrol.
Trauttmansdorff Castle in Merano is also a place for art and culture, where concerts and various cultural events regularly take place. A very special highlight are the 'Garden Nights', a resounding festival of World Music, one of the most important in Northern Italy. From June to August, open-air concerts with international top stars take place in the natural amphitheater of the garden.
