Alta Pusteria / Hochpustertal

Vacation in the Alta Pusteria / Hochpustertal - in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites - promises fun and relaxation for the whole family. Here, cultural richness and unique natural beauty combine to create an unparalleled holiday experience. Tourism began here in the 19th century with the construction of the railway. Around 1900, the Alta Pusteria was extremely popular as a summer resort in the former Danube monarchy, and numerous famous personalities appreciated the holiday region. The most prominent guests included the Austrian heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand, the German heir to the throne Friedrich, King Albert of Saxony, as well as many artists such as Gustav Mahler.

There are countless opportunities to actively spend your vacation. In summer, the Alta Pusteria / Hochpustertal is a fantastic hiking area, the Fanes-Prags Nature Park and the Sexten Dolomites with the famous Three Peaks are certainly among the most beautiful in the Alpine region. The Dolomites with their mighty rock formations are also a popular and rewarding destination for climbers. For cyclists and mountain bikers, there are numerous options from the Drau Cycle Path, which starts in Toblach (and leads to Maribor in Slovenia), to the most challenging mountain bike routes. Nordic walking, golf, rafting, paragliding, horseback riding, carriage rides, the adventure park with high ropes course in Toblach, bathing lakes, a summer toboggan run, and the Acquafun adventure pool (with a sports pool and wellness area) in Innichen are also part of the leisure activities.

In winter, at the Alta Pusteria / Hochpustertal ski center, you will find pure skiing fun on 55 km of downhill slopes! Skiing and snowboarding are still carefree winter pleasures here, and the opportunities for cross-country skiing – especially in the Toblach cross-country center with the new Nordic Arena – are fantastic. The rich range of activities also includes winter hiking, snowshoeing, tobogganing, and ice skating. The indoor climbing halls in Sexten and Toblach (the highest in Italy!) are a challenge at any time of the year. The Alta Pusteria / Hochpustertal is a particularly family-friendly holiday region.

Numerous attractions, as well as many hotels, are specifically geared towards families. The range of first-class and attractive hotels is large, offering sports hotels, romantic hotels, wellness hotels, or exclusive design hotels that provide the perfect ambiance for all preferences. Elegant furnishings and modern wellness areas, together with the famous South Tyrolean hospitality, make the holiday experience perfect.

As an alternative to outdoor activities, the Alta Pusteria / Hochpustertal holiday region offers a variety of cultural highlights. These include significant historical buildings, such as the collegiate church of Innichen – one of the most beautiful Romanesque sacred buildings in the Eastern Alps – or the Herbstenburg in Toblach, as well as the Dolomites Museum "Dolomythos". Cultural events of international importance are the annual Mahler Weeks in Toblach and, of course, the new South Tyrol Festival, which took place for the first time in September 2010, also in Toblach, adding another highlight to the holiday region.

High up, surrounded by a breathtaking mountain panorama, different rules apply than down in the valley. The weather turns faster, a planned tour sometimes requires more effort than expected, and a small misstep can sometimes necessitate an early return.
