Terlano

The picturesque town of Terlano on the South Tyrolean Wine Road is located on the eastern side of the Adige Valley between Merano and Bolzano. Terlano is surrounded by vineyards as well as apple and asparagus crops. Wine has been cultivated here for at least 2000 years, and it still thrives on the slopes of the Tschögglberg mountain range.

Attractions

The ruins of Castle Neuhaus, also known as Maultasch Castle, are visible from afar and stand above Terlano, forming the landmark of the town. Named after Margarethe von Maultasch (Margarethe of Tyrol), the famous Tyrolean princess from the 14th century, the facility with the characteristic keep has now fallen into ruin. A short hike from Terlano along the Margarethenpromenade up to the castle is recommended and can be visited all year round. The parish church of Maria Assunta stands out prominently in the town's skyline. The Gothic building made of reddish porphyry was erected at the site where a Romanesque church or even earlier late Roman buildings had stood before. The frescoes, which mainly depict scenes from the life of Saint Mary, are particularly noteworthy.

In the surroundings of Terlano, visitors will find wonderful opportunities for walks and hikes. There is a wide range of tours, from leisurely walks to challenging mountain hikes. You can also take the cable car to the Tschöggelberg and go on hikes or mountain bike tours from there. The view is worth the trip.

The region is perfect for mountain biking or road cycling tours. The traffic-free cycle paths along the Adige River or through the orchards and vineyards also lead to historical sites that reflect the region's eventful history. Cyclists of all ages and skill levels can take tours on the relatively flat valley floor. The "bikemobil Card" allows the combined use of rental bikes, buses, and trains. Bike rentals are available at the train stations. Leisure cyclists can also rent e-bikes to explore the landscape without extreme effort. Terlano is also a popular destination or a popular stopover for active holidaymakers cycling the South Tyrolean Wine Road.

The robust wines from Terlano are characterized by a rich fruit component and a light mineral note, which is created by the porphyry soils of the region. Terlano is particularly known for its Sauvignon, which pairs excellently with the asparagus cultivated in the region. April and May are asparagus season, and the delicate vegetable can be found on menus everywhere. Allegedly, the "Bozner Sauce," made from hard-boiled eggs and served with asparagus, originated in Terlano. You should also taste the famous Terlaner Weinsuppe (Terlan wine soup).
