Which mountaineer does not want to stand on the summit of the Großglockner at least once in their life? But this mountain fascinates not only because of its extraordinary height. Its majestic peak is surrounded by an almost mystical aura that makes it so incomparable and continues to attract mountaineers from all over the world like a magnet.
Kalser Glocknerhaus
Exactly 200 years after the first ascent of the Großglockner, the Kalser Glocknerhaus was opened in the year 2000. The history of this first ascent is naturally dedicated its own chapter in the highly interesting exhibition. The equipment of that time is compared to the high-tech equipment of a modern climber, and it shows that, apart from the materials, not much has changed.
The museum also draws an incredibly exciting arc from prehistory to the present. Artifacts over 4000 years old, such as a perforated stone axe from the 2nd millennium BC or bone remains from prehistoric cult sites, testify to the long settlement history in the Kalser valley. From Roman times, coin finds are on display, which prove the settlement continuity even in the Roman Empire.
A modern, interactive exhibition
How strongly a place like Kals is shaped by the surrounding nature is vividly illustrated by numerous religious and secular customs and traditions. This tradition is not only described but also experienced interactively. The impressive natural landscape of the Glockner area and the peculiarities of its flora and fauna are shown in another room. Also new is a small but exquisite mineral exhibition.
Finally, it is also about the mountain itself, the 3,798 m high Großglockner. The tourist development since the first ascent in 1800 is shown, and two mountain huts are exhibited as examples, the Stüdlhütte and the Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte. The Hohe Tauern National Park is also a topic. The various routes leading to the Großglockner are described in detail, and at the end, you stand on the legendary summit and experience the magnificent panorama that is offered up there.
The Kalser Glocknerhaus is open during the summer months from Monday to Friday. Further information at Tel. +43(0) 50212540 or on www.kalskommunikation.at/wer-wo-was/glocknerausstellung
